PCLINUXOS to yum?
« on: February 24, 2012, 01:14:48 PM »
I heard vague rumors that pclinuxos is going to switch to yum.. That would be great news.. Is it still a future plan to make yum the default package manager? or
Office required Windows XP or better, so I installed PCLinuxOS :D

Only if it can be made to fit.

I'm looking forward to having yum in PCLOS for quite some time. Synaptic becomes quite slow and everytime one invokes that or apt-get from command line, the reading of package list takes quite a bit of time. I know we wouldn't need to install/remove packages that often but with a rolling release model it does tend to get used quite frequently. I've the latest 2012.1 install in my machine and this is the only thing that makes the distro from achieving a perfect score  ;D.

Adapting yum to our way, i.e. rolling release with multiple mirrors of one repository, is no cake walk. :-\ Anyone who thinks it is is welcome to try.

Why hurry?  Synaptic is tried and proven and it is serving well.

Besides, any changes of that sort would have to be made by the creator of PCLinuxOS, Texstar.

This idea, if it ever becomes an endeavor ain't gonna be easy.   :-\

yes, it is, but I have some bad behavior to report.
I hesitate to do that in broken packages as it only suffers from hick-up every now and then

Where do we discuss that ?
Thanks

But if Texstar have to slow down his work on pclos, how his doctor says, we can see yum here so far away. I'm so hurry because I think yum can be the best for us. Apt-rpm is so old.

But it still works fine for me. I'm in no hurry.

I agree, it does everything I ask of it. Yum certainly has it's advantages, and I'd like to see it here, too.

But I'm sure its not very high on the priority list of our packagers, who, by the way, are really doing a fantastic job in keeping PCLOS up to par!

When I said converting yum (and yumex, of course) for our use is no cakewalk, I wasn't talking out of my butt. I meant what I said. If and when it gets done, it is likely that I will be doing it. If any of you dares to bother Texstar with this, you will answer to me. >:(

Adapting yum to our way, i.e. dynamic/rolling release with multiple mirrors of one repository will take a lot of work, if it can be accomplished. Which one of you who say, "Let us use yum/yumex" can post facts, not just a request, on the conversion?

Neal's got enough to do and it's not that urgent apt-rpm and synaptic still work quite well.

That goes double for me.  >:(

Neal and I have definite legitimate reasons to contact Texstar for advise and information critical to keeping PCLinuxOS on track. Each time we do, we feel guilty for having to disturb him, so we keep our contacts to an absolute minimum. We certainly welcome any contact Texstar himself initiates, but those we initiate are only those of a "need to know, and must know now" nature.

The "Boss" needs his rest, and we will thump heads, and kick butt, if need be, to assure he gets it!!

So do I, and I hope my wife/kids won't dump me on that basis   ;)
