you can also vacuum the .thunderbird folder and firefox... with  bleachbit..
Office required Windows XP or better, so I installed PCLinuxOS :D

Tried that. Still doesn't work.  I also uninstalled Thunderbird, then reinstalled.  Same result.  I also created another user and tried to copy over .thunderbird after having deleted the one there and it still won't work.

What could I possibly be doing wrong? >:(

FWIW, I put PCLOS on a 120 Gig SSD a couple of months ago..   (It really screams.. There was a very noticeable increase in performance).

My root partition also came out as 12 Gigs, but I've only used 36%   I don't see myself filling it up any time soon.

On Thunderbird....   All I did with the new SSD was to do a fresh install of PCLOS.   After that, I dragged and dropped my /home directory from the old mechanical drive to the new SSD..    Then I copied over a few config files from /etc (so samba and a couple of other apps would work), then I installed a couple of programs that never got installed during the default installation...  After that everything ran and looked like it did on the old drive.

Have you come OK with Thunderbird, or are you still in trouble
If all else fails........!!
You can move individual mailboxes by hand, the one after the other
Say you have a folder called Music
then you have to look for 3 files
a-Music.sbd
b-Music ( which is only a few Kb big )
c-Music.msf
d----maybe there are other files attached to< Music >....don't know

Move these to a new Thundrbird install
If it works, try next one

Next thing I can think of , if I was desparate:
Set up othe email client ( say Kmail )
Try to import my files from .thunderbird into Kmail
if it works, setup Thundr again and import from Kmail

No flippin idea if it will work

wish you luck

Btw, you know about the addon for thunderbird ? ImportExportTool.
I just installed it and backed up all my mail to html files.
Works fine for me. looks exactly as I have setup my mailboxes.
The great thing in this world is not so much where we stand,
as in what direction we are moving.

Just curious.  Is your SSD plugged into a SATA3 controller?  I ask because mine is only SATA2 and while it is about twice as fast as my older drives (in numbers) I don't know if I would describe it as screaming.

As for the size of root, I've come to the conclusion that 12 gigs is probably just right.

As for Thunderbird I'm stumped.  Everything I've read and what has been posted tells me all I have to do is copy over the folder and it should work.  But I still have a problem.  I does show all of my sub-folders and email filters but the pane on the right where my emails show up is just not there.  Could there be a setting in Thunderbird that needs to be changed?

All help is welcome and thanks for your experiences.

I don't know if that would work for me.  I have all of my email stored on another drive.  In the Local Folders section of Account Settings I point to that folder and I can view my emails in PCLOS or any other OS I choose.  This is what is confusing.  In the new install I'm only copying over the hidden folder with all of it's settings plus Address Book and email filters.  This should just work but I still have problems.  I don't know what could be wrong.   >:(

Very frustrating,

Just shooting at flying ducks here............ ;D

Maybe something with permissions  ?
Maybe on your old drive you were a different user than on the new one ?
Haven't a clue actually....just shooting in the air

Actually I did us a little different user name.  Could that be the problem?  I think I changed the permissions to match the user but is there anything else that would need to be changed?

You can right click on all folders and sub-folders and see if they have the right permission.
If you haven't done already, you could try:
open a terminal
su to root
navigate to where your mail folder is and do a " chown <name> /path where your mailfolder is"
if it is a .folder, maybe you have to remove the . first ( don't know for sure )

can't think of anything else right now

Finally!!!!!!!!!! I'm glad to report I finally got Thunderbird to work.  After having exhausted all other possibilities I found that the partition that I keep my email on was set to "umask=000" and "user" was also checked in the install that worked.  So I made those changes in the new install on my new SSD, rebooted and now it works.

Proof that the simplest of things can be the most difficult to solve.

I'm sure I'll be back with more problems, as least now that I've worked with it a little longer I'm also happy to report that indeed this new drive does in fact FLY!!!!!!!!

oh my I know the FLYing part.  Indeed, got some PCLOS or another installed on the SSD while testing the hw of a new build this weekend.  And am now so thoroughly spoiled, no, can't go into it will get into trouble :'(

Yeah, but I know the FLYing part.  ;)  want to bug OP as to how I can get the linux not only running on but even booting off SSD but well,
that would be another thread I dare not ever start.

However, I hear you and share your JOY  :P  SSD & PCLinuxOS all the way  :-*

Did I mention I know the FLYing part  ;D

That should not be a problem.  Just go into your bios and configure your harddrive booting priorities.  By making it the first harddrive to be looked to for boot information it's just a simple matter of allowing PCLOS to install.  When you get to the part where it asks where to put the boot loader just select the MBR of your SSD.

That's what I did and so far it boots just fine (yes faster).  My problems are mainly matching the configuration of my old install so everything worked as before.

Go ahead you'll like it!
