[SOLVED]Hard drive Tick of death
« on: February 22, 2012, 02:20:18 PM »
While working on another issue, I have noticed laptop HD is occasionally ticking. This is generally the warning of HD failure but in this case I think software related.

pclos 2012-kde on Toshiba A305 with aftermarket Western Digital 1600BEVT SATA drive. This is not thrashing or a regular tick but an occassional slap with HD LED constant flashing while laptop is sitting idle.

Checked msec in PCC it is not running
Checked nepomuk for indexing. It is active but not enabled . (Don't use it so don't know what that means hardware-wise)
Checked top -  a firefox plugin was using resources so killed FF- no change

Pulled HD - placed in other PC - no noise
placed in external case - no noise-
put back in Toshiba - running pclos lxde - no noise.

Any ideas appreciated.

[UPDATE] Apparently Toshiba has a HD compatibility mode in BIOS . AHCI or Compatibility. Changed back to AHCI and all seems quieter now. Still occasional click but at least not a "slap" and no regular HD LED flashing which was annoying.
