No voume icon in LXDE system tray.
« on: February 22, 2012, 12:33:33 AM »
When I installed LXDE Mini, I put it in an external HDD, because I needed it to take it with me and work/play with it in different computers (at home, at work, in a laptop).

The computer where I installed it initially does not have a sound card - the built-in one is defective and disabled in the BIOS.
So, after the installation, I didn't have a volume icon in the system tray.
I thought this was normal, so I didn't mind about it.

But when I boot it in my home PC, which does have a sound card and it's properly detected and working, I still didn't have a tray volume icon until I installed volumeicon.
Also, I guess that since is the Mini version, it doesn't come with a GUI mixer - other than alsamixer. At least, I couldn't find one.
So, I installed gnome-alsamixer, which is working very nicely.

I don't mind at all installing this two packages; my question is just whether LXDE Mini does come with a volume icon and a mixer pre-installed, or I do need to install them myself.

Particularly, I am curious about the volume icon.
The lxpanel package description in Synaptic says that it has a "Volume control plug-in (optional, written by jserv)".
But I can't find any such plugin in Synaptic.
So how does this work? Is the plugin already built-in? Then, how do I activate it?
Or do I need to install the plugin? But where is it?

I like the way volumeicon and gnome-alsamixer work, so I'll probably keep them; still want to satisfy my curiosity about this matter.

PS: Right after installation I did a full update, so everything is up to date.

LXDE does not use volumeicon.
Leiche gave a solution. :) Also, you can open lxdecc and click the Refresh Panel icon or reinstall lxpanel.

Are we PCLOS users nocturnal creatures, or are you in a - very - different time zone?  :D

Another reply in just a couple of minutes. And it's almost 3 AM. Maybe I am dreaming.  ;)

right click on a panel > add/remove panel item > Add > Volume Control

I don't know how I missed that. Maybe it was too obvious, so I didn't think to look there.

Thanks!
