... usually using the arrow keys, left and right ... if you use the numeric keypad pay attention to NumLock state ...

Grandpa:
OK quiet was there.  I added splash=verbose.  Didn't see much more.  But it boots OK, like before.  This mean I will have to do that all the time?  If so I guess I can live with that.  Now any idea about the scroll wheel?

Look a bit strange ... because the options "quiet" and splash="..." are meant to change only the screen output while booting ...

Anyway, yes, you can apply the changes permanently by editing the file /boot/grub/menu.lst, there you will find the boot stanza with the same option you edited while pressing F3. You need to be root to edit that file. Also, use a text editor i.e. kwrite, not a word processor.  ;)

I'm sorry AS.  I had to go back and reread your instruction again.  I was not removing "quiet".  When I did that and added "splash=verbose" I saw a lot.  Sorry for my mistake in reading correctly.  I believe I understand how to edit the boot menu list.  I will do that later after I find out how to fix the mouse.  Thank you so much for your help.  This is why I love this forum and PCLinuxOS.
