VLC and Phoenix 2012.2
« on: February 21, 2012, 08:30:28 AM »
having a problem with VLC. when it tries to open the first dialog window that opens is HUGE, nearly full screen. Everything freezes until Phoenix reboots itself to the login screen. had the same problem with phinx but it seems to have gone away.

here's a screen of the error I had to take since it was frozen...

Hey Lou,

You could try this:

from https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/25145

Code: [Select]
/usr/lib/vlc/vlc-cache-gen -f usr/lib/vlc/plugins

it's the qt packages that VLC run on ... the default theme for VLC is the qt based theme ... which is why you get this interface error ... this is why i took Phinx the way i did because i wanted rid of this qt crud on a gtk environment ... just causes way too much crud ... easily changed through tools >>> preferences >>> look & feel dropdown >>> GTK

I would always suggest as i have done previously with regards to VLC ... install task-multimedia ... this resolves all these types of issue by installing all the required qt libs etc ...

i would also suggest giving ya VM 512mb ram minimum ....

well, installed task-multimedia... didn't help. my vm is 1560mb... and if you meant "tools" as in VLC it freezes long before I can get there.  ;D

tried and failed unfortunately.
I actually have an ArchBang install and didn't run into the problem there. but thanks for checking.

well i have it runnin in VM ... works and installs fine .... get the same error in Terminal in relation to this default look & feel being set to qt ... as for your crash ... sounds like a problem with VirtualBox ... coz the message you see doesnt crash my system ...
Kori? can you give me a break down of your VB settings and do you install the guest additions, and if so, the ones from the repos or the actual VB additions?

thanks

no guest additions dude .... just plain VB ...8gb hdd and 512mb ram ... everything else is standard
thanks. that may be my problem. I always install the GAs although they work with my other PCLOS installs.

ugh. I don't know what's going on but I did have VLC running then after I added a couple gtk and icon themes VLC stopped working and freezes the guest. I tried going back to the default theme and icons but it didn't help. guess I'll stick with gnome-mplayer. that works fine.
