USB Persistent
« on: February 21, 2012, 07:39:10 AM »
I installed the latest PCLinuxOS to a USB stick, using the installer from the repository. I selected "persistent" at the boot prompt. When I tried to download and install LibreOffice through the manager, I got the message that I had to install to my hard drive. Isn't the USB drive the equivalent of a HD for this purpose?

There is a fundamental difference between a standard install and the creation of a Live - USB or other - environment. You can, if you wish do a 'standard' install to a USB drive but the almost constant writing to a flash stick can reduce its life time, which is why a live session on flash is preferred.

There are some posts about getting LO in a live environment using lomanager ......  IIRC there needs to be a large amount of ram to be able to achieve it.

If you were to remaster an installation which already had LO installed, then that could be used on a LiveUSB without much problems ........  depending of course on the hardware spec of the PC on which it is run.

You might also be able to install in Persistent mode to a liveUSB, while running on a PC with the required hardware, and then it should be usable on PCs with lesser hardware specs.

Thanks. I thought the USB install was the same as an installation to a small hard drive. I guess I learned something.

If you want a standard install then use the install wizard from the LiveCD or another LiveUSB  ;)

Hi yall,

I installed PCLOS on a 16GB USB stick, so I can take my 'PC' always with me.

/home is encrypted using truecrypt for security reasons (just in case I loose the USB stick).
Booting the system and mounting the encrypted partition works just great.

My problem is that I can not create a printer via PCC.
Everytime I click on Setup the Printer(s), PCC locks up and I have to ctrl-esc and kill the
PCC. Everything else works, just not the add printer function.

However, I can add, manage printers via Firefox/cups (localhost:631)
What drak is the add printer(s) icon calling/running? Can I reinstall/add that drak part?

Open Synaptic and search for task-printing. There are several packages with that name. At the minimum, you'll need the one for your printer, as well as task-printing-server. You may also need to install the plain task-printing one, or task-printing-misc.

Thanks djohnston,
that fixed the problem. I wonder why the installer skipped those tasks.
