[SOLVED]encrypt existing /home on a reinstall
« on: February 21, 2012, 01:22:55 AM »
Going to try a re-install of pclos 2012.02 on Toshiba A305 that currently has 2010. The existing /home is NOT encrypted. I noticed installer did not give option to do so during trial run. I did an encrypted partition on another laptop but it was a fresh install of a clean / and clean /home. Am assuming this option appears only if /home is a new fresh partition. I do have data backed up.

any trick to encrypting this existing /home partition during drakinstall?
Any thoughts appreciated

Hi Trio3b,

Going to try a re-install of pclos 2012.02 on Toshiba A305 that currently has 2010.

I'm assuming it was originally installed from a 2010 ISO, and fully updated, therefore effectively a 2012.

Correct!

You have to create a new encrypted partition, say on /dev/sda5, a new partition will appear out: /dev/mapper/crypt_sda5
then you need to create a filesystem on top of the encrypted partition, this should explain why you can't encrypt an existing partition.

You should find several details here ...

Have fun!  ;)

That pretty much explains everything. I am getting ahead of myself here as I have yet to successfully install 2012.02 to this Toshiba A305 as described over in the laptop hardware forums if you care to follow it over there.

Thank you AS.
