Rolling Updates
« on: February 22, 2012, 07:26:44 AM »

Just a general question, which, though its software related, is so general I posted it here.

I just downloaded KDE 2012.2 and installed it on my backup machine (I have 2011.9 KDE [fully updated] on my primary) and noted the note on the note on the "How" of updating via the repositories AND the statement that PCLimuxOS utilized "rolling backups."  The posed two questions:

1) Historically, after about two years, the versions are no longer supported in the repositiories.  Has that changed?

2) Does this "rolling update" include the new kernels, as they come along?

Thanks

Deb

I think the current version is rolling since 2010....
so at the moment it's already 2 years.

Rolling update doesn't "include" new kernels, but from time to time there are new kernels available in Synaptic...
=> they are not forced to install when doing full update, but when you want, you can just install such a new kernel  ;)
=> when a kernel upgrade is +/- necessary, it's posted in software announcements / news - but that doesn't happen often

Hope this helps a little

Thanks for the quick reply - but that is the norm for our Forum, isn't it? :)

On further question.  If I wanted to update the kernel, which I do not either want or need to do at this time, do I update it in the same manner all the files, programs and apps are done in synaptic, or is there a special process?

Thanks again

Deb

dangbert,

You could glance at Old-Polack's post here: http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,102324.msg872176.html#msg872176:

Quote
We've been updating the basesystem and the toolchain dynamically, just like the rest of the system, since 2009. The only reason we did a complete reinstall for the 2010 release was to avoid approximately 6 months of intermediate upgrades, to maintain proper upgrade paths, to get to where we ultimately wanted the system to be. It was a time saving measure, to upgrade the entire repo in one step.

And yes, you do update the kernel "in the same manner all the files, programs and apps are done in synaptic". It just won't be updated automatically when you do a full update/upgrade of your system. You have to do it yourself, after which the new kernel will be the default one at boot. But your old kernel will still be there as a choice.
