Phoenix 2012.02 32 bit: some problems
« on: March 04, 2012, 07:30:21 AM »
I have installed PCLinuxOS 2012.2 32 bit XFCE "Phoenix" edition on my desktop PC (an Intel Processor, 4 Gb RAM).
Some problems happens.
First (but this is a "general problem", I think: NOT a Phoenix-problem in specific), I cant' install some packages (that'a ARE on Repository, but I cant't install the same). There are -for example- Texlive and other relate packages (so, I cannot install Kile, the my preferred text editor), I can't install AbiWord too. I I cant't install the xfce4-weather-plugin (are that a XFCE problem, specifically?... I don't know).
When I attempt to apply italian localization (I am italian, of course), tht's don't work at all.
Tell me that my System was no9t up-to-update. But Synaptic tell me... there are NO upate at all!
So, I see that a single package seem to be obsolete: the xfce4-weathe-plugin.
But there are NOT update at all, for it. So I cannot localize my System.
Workaround: I unistall the xfce4-weather-plugin. By this way, finally, Add-Locale work... and I have, now, my System in italian language.
But... when I try to install the xfce4-weather-plugin... installation don't work (telling me that package are obsolete).
Other trouble: when I try to open Thunar as ROOT, it open, right, but... no directory are visible! I can see names, but NOT folders!
Other touble more: when I try to change my cursor-theme, it don't work good.
I have new theme (I tried to use oxygen theme, because I like it, or my cursor, everytime), but i see the same the "default theme" everytime (the original theme [wonderland?], that's I don't like at all).
So, I attempt to change the cursor-theme, but my efforts appairs vain...
This is to report you my issue, not to tell you that your work wasn't a good work, of course. I like your PClinuxOS, I like your wonderful works. I( hope, due muy little post, to help -a little- you to more improve your beautiful works. Thank you.

Show result of command:
Code: [Select]
cat /etc/apt/sources.list
Code: [Select]
apt-cache policy
Did you do full dist-upgrade after installation? You can do it from Synaptic or (faster method) from terminal as root:
Code: [Select]
apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgradeFirst show results of commands.

I haven't Shutter on my PCLinuxOS. But image posted into linked thread are identical than I see on my PC when I opened Thunar as ROOT (if I oper Thunar as normal user, all is good: I can see folders, names, all).
I update everytime -in PCLinuxOS- using Synaptic: I don't like at all (really, I hate a lot to use it!) to use Terminal, with any "distro". If Terminal is needed, I -everytime- completely resign and desert that "distro".
Now, I'm using other my PCLinuxOS installation (I like it, so I have more than one installation... because I have more than one PC in my home), but later I start my last Phoenix installation and see about all your suggestions (and post here the results of suggested commands). Thank you!

I am italian and I live in Italy, so I have the GARR (from Naples, Milan and Bologna) imposted as my default Repository.

Pinned Packages:
     xfce4-weather-plugin -> (not found)

The xfce4-wheater-plugins is missing in all other Repository too. I attempt to use -for example- other ways (Headnet and others), but it (that weather plugin) was missing too, everywhere.

Thank you more, for your time wast in my little questions and for your attention to me.

More about my cursor-theme issue: I can see the oxygen cursor-theme when I am using Firefox, but NOT when I am on my desktop or in others times...
I attempt to reinstall a package:
kda4-workspace-core
(it contain the oxygen cursor-theme).
And I have an advice, at last (ended the reinstallation): the "index of icon" is missed.
This info can be useful for you?

Thank you very much!
Similar issue I had whit my PCLinuxOS Phoenix 64 bit (your beautiful -very beautiful: your theme is incredible!- version). My cursor is "unstable" (I like the oxygen-white due the dark desktop-theme, obviusly). Sometimes, all work and cursor are right (oxygen-theme, white), but when my System go under stress (when I open a program, for example), the cursor theme change suddently and become a wonderland-theme (black, of course). About a minute or two... and it return to oxygen-white theme...
Not very different is the story on my PCLinuxOS Phoenix 32 bit: cursor is "oxygen whithe", but appear "wonderlad" (black) the same... Only if I are on Firefox, it return suddently to appear white (his real oxygen-white theme), but it return black (the wonderland theme) if my mouse leave Firefox and go (for example) on Panel...

About your Phoenix 64 bit: it is a "piece of art", really! You are great, Sproggy. You are a true artist, in my opinion.

I've noticed that quirky behavior too.  :-\

Nothing to do: my oxygen-white cursor theme can see only when I'm using Firefox... and disappear (suddenly return to "wonderland theme") when I go whit my cursor on desktop...
I have see that the "index-theme" file is into the oxygen-white folder. And no index-theme file is into the wonderland-theme folder...
I have tried to switch to other (white) cursor themes too, but nothing happens: if I am using Firefox I can see my selected cursor theme. If I put my cursor outside the Firefox windows it return to wonderland theme (the default theme, I suppose)...
Also: AbiWord is no-installable at all, because it's need a library and an evince file that's is not -I suppose- on Repository. I attempt to use all different Servers: same result.
I have installed -on same time- the PCLinuxOS 2012 LXDE-mini (32 bit) too... and, when I attempt to install AbiWord, all works: so, I have AbiWord in my LXDE-mini installation and have-not AbiWord (because, I can't install it) in my Phoenix Edition (and that's... using the same -identical- Repository). Same issue about my cursor: Oxygen-White theme works great in LXDE Edition and works very bad in XFCE Edition (all cursor themes I have installed works bad: only the wonderland theme -the "default theme"- works good)...
There are some problem, I think, but I simply don't know what is the problem...  :(

About AbiWord: problem solved, this night.
I attempt to install AbiWord and installation works good. Thank you, people!
My cursor theme problem, anyway, are  :-\ unchanged... I set other cursor themes ad see it when I'm using Firefox, but other times I can see only the "default theme"...
