2012.2 livecd/install probs
« on: February 20, 2012, 03:40:17 AM »
Hi just downloaded the latest.  I have tried it as a live cd and tried installing it but the progress bar stops about 1/3 of the way.  Any ideas?

start the liveCD and select Media Check to see if the iso was downloaded and burnt successfully. Ensure to have sufficient disk space for the installation.

you see, that is what Media Check is for  ;) If it fails, then that means that either downloading the iso-image failed (check the md5sum of it) and/or that you had a bad burn when writing the iso-image to the CD. Verify the download, and then burn another CD at low speed, then run Media Check and only if this is positive you should install from your CD.
good luck,

The media check was ok for both the download and the cd but it still hangs.  So I am going back on to 2010.  Thanks pinoc.

How much ram is installed on your system ?

Also, at LiveCD Grub prompt, press F6 (options) remove the option "quiet" and change "splash=silent" to "splash=verbose", you will have a chance to see what is going on.  ;)

I assume you know that you will not be able to update or install new packages on 2010  ;)

Same problem here. Just downloaded the 2012.2 Phoenix Edition.
From live USB the progress bar gets stuck about a 1/3 of the way.
Using live CD, just won't boot at all.
MD5 checksum is fine.
Think there may be a problem with the iso image as this is very unusual for me, with any distro.

edit:
just to add a bit more, if I boot from USB, it sticks with the message:
/initrd/bin/ash:
Can't access tty; job control turned off

From cd, it sticks on a blank screen with:
Initializing gfx code
boot:

Any help would be appreciated.

How is formatted your USB stick ? Must be ext2 or ext3 or ext4. Check also the partition type, must be Linux

Phoenix 2012.02 is working fine for me, both from LiveCD and from LiveUSB.  ;)

Hi AS..
USB was created using unetbootin, has been used for dozens of other OSs including past pclinuxos's without any problems.
CD was burned at lowest speed with Nerolinux4, again used a number of times, with various distros, all without problem.
Downloaded image checks out fine.
I downloaded it from the distrowatch page, but can't see why that would be the issue.
I'm lost as to what the problem might be.

USB was created using unetbootin

Had the same problem last night when creating a Live USB or a
full USB install on a flash drive.

1) Completely delete the flash drive thru PCC disk management program
and recreate and reformat that as well.    Better than GParted.
2) check with the testdisk program that all parameters are correct

3) if not reboot and go back to step 1

4)  then redo the install with unetbootin or the PCL Live USB Creator (preferably)

The above solves 99.9% of my problems on my machine.

If not post back then.

Something from a previous install is hanging around your MBR or partition table
stopping the process from successfully completing.   Otherwise I need over 1.5ghz
processor to burn a CD with the newer disk burning hardware.   So I use
flash drives instead.

I've done this so many times I have it memorized.

Have a good one.

I followed your directions
"Also, at LiveCD Grub prompt, press F6 (options) remove the option "quiet" and change "splash=silent" to "splash=verbose", you will have a chance to see what is going on"
Would you believe 2012.2 booted.  I guess I will now install it tomorrow.  Time to go to bed now.  Thank you for your help even if you didn't know you were helping me.
