Video Card Suggestions Please
« on: February 19, 2012, 08:58:44 AM »
I run PCLinux KDE on an older Compaq Presario (2004) that has the VIA integrated graphics
and I purchased and installed an Invidia GeFroce FX5200 PCI mounted Video card about 2 years ago.

Well the Invidia card has gone bad and I failed to register the product in order to obtain the lifetime warranty.

So I am looking for suggestions for a replacement video card.
All suggestions will be considered.

Thank You in advance to anyone that responds !

I was doing some computer service work for a friend who wanted dual monitors installed. Just so happens the best option for them was to remove the PCI graphics card and use the on-board graphics. This left me with a free PCI ATI Radeon HD 6500 card. I just installed it the other day and everything works great.

why pci only?

isn't there a agp port on that machine?

there is many big pci ati cards around but mostly will give you trouble, find a cheap nvidia pci is complicated, expensive

sometimes is hard to believe but a case upgrade sometimes is cheaper than a single piece of hardware

Exactly this, I recently was building a computer for myself and was looking at all the parts. If you want something cheap, you can usually actually find something prebuilt on ebay for about 100/150 bucks (see here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dell-OptiPlex-755-Desktop-Core-2-Duo-E6550-2-33GHz-2GB-80GB-DVD-ROM-Vista-COA-/270913733415?pt=Desktop_PCs&hash=item3f13b78327#ht_2087wt_907).

This will probably be just a little more expensive but will solve you a host of problems. Even my old computer that has IDE hard drives is starting to become more and more expensive to find parts for...
