Try to reinstall grub from the LIVE-CD, you'll find it under More Applications>Configuration

Do you mean "redo MBR"?  If so I've already done that twice.

If you mean something else, there is nothing else that indicates reinstalling grub.

Yes, that is what I meant. Since it's a no go, AS is the person to pay attention too.

Nah ... I'm only preparing the info for Old-Polack  :D ;D

I just have to ask-Since my home is on a seperate partition, does it make sense to just reinstall over my current PCLOS  install (without formatting anything) to correct whatever got messed up?  And if so, should I set the controller to "AHCI" prior to reinstalling?

What do you think?  I don't want to lose my use of PCLOS on the old drive when I do an install to the ssd so I have somthing to fall back on if anything goes wrong. That is anything more :(

Actually I think your issue is not related to AHCI/Legacy settings (of course, may be I'm wrong).

Try as follow, from LiveCD, open a terminal and su to root, we will have all info about your bootloader config:
Code: [Select]
mkdir  /sdb5
mount  /dev/sdb5  /sdb5
ls -l  /sdb5/boot
cat  /sdb5/boot/grub/menu.lst
cat  /sdb5/etc/fstab
umount  /dev/sdb5

Try to reinstall grub from the LIVE-CD, you'll find it under More Applications>Configuration

Do you mean "redo MBR"?  If so I've already done that twice.

If you mean something else, there is nothing else that indicates reinstalling grub.

MCP

Yes, that is what I meant. Since it's a no go, AS is the person to pay attention too.

Nah ... I'm only preparing the info for Old-Polack  :D ;D

Yep!  :D

back to MCP issue ... to me all look fine ... and remain two things:

a) the BIOS is not set to boot from the second disk
b) the Grub code on on /dev/sdb MBR ... for some reason ... has been corrupted

handing off to Old-Polack  ;D

Until MCP ran the Redo MBR application I would have bet 100:1 that a) above, was the only problem. Now I would say the likelihood is both.

MCP:

Go back into BIOS and check the hard drive boot order. You have two hard drives of similar size, 750.2 GB. One of those should be the first in the boot order chain. If your BIOS shows it, (some do not) you want the one with Disk identifier: 0x27a9be4d set as the boot drive. Once you have that done, save the settings and reboot.

Post your results.

And once again OP had the correct answer.  Switching AHCI did in fact change the boot order of the drives. I thought about that but dismissed it early on.  Duh! I should have done that earlier.

I also noticed that switching to the AHCI driver, also has boot order on it's drive page (just found that).  So now all is working as it should but now I'm using the AHCI driver.

Will I at least get a boost in performace for all my trouble? Let me know.

And I can't sign off with out giving a BIG THANK YOU to OP again.  I don't know what we would do without you. ;D ;D ;D ;D

Gratefully,
MCP
