There is no man for xsearch. It is a very simple search engine. It doesn't use wildcards. It searches only in your home directory. Searching for any file extension, such as .png, will bring up a list of files with that extension. You can choose to search your subdirectories.

for me, going any deeper than /media fails!

it's a Live-session, but I'm fully updated (and my workarounds still function).

A live session is meant to be used for troubleshooting purposes, or for testing the software before installation. You cannot really expect to be able to run PCLinuxOS like a normal installation from the live CD. The guest account has limited capabilities and running as root comes with security problems. Why have you not installed to hard drive? What is wrong with the hard drive?

If you insist on running only from a live CD, you are just spinning your wheels. As Neal said, the xsearch program is meant to operate within your /home directory. That does not include the /media directory. Most of the root directories, (/boot, /var, etc.) won't be accessible to a regular user.

1. surfing and working on some texts is all I do at the moment, so I run as guest. I only act as root (by supplying the password) to be able to change settings and f.i. install the printer (and later maybe the scanner and a tablet).
the hd (80 GB) is not reckognised with a USB-interface, still have to try directly on an IDE-port. probably a problem in the electronics.

2. i can (as guest) search in /media and than it finds the files on the parts of the hd (windows-xp) that are mounted, that I don't want to install to.

And yet you're posting about user installed packages that don't work properly in a live CD session? Makes no sense. None, whatsoever.

that's a bit harsh, isn't it?? some things work, others don't.

but, still this is the first time that someone is so clear about the limitations of a Live-session. it could be explained a bit clearer on the site what it's good for and what not.

Sounds like you need to forget the live CD and go with a live usb instead.

wiko,
Once a CD is burnt, it is set in a permanent form. This is commonly known. Why would we need to post common knowledge on our site? ???

You can not make permanent changes on a liveCD. Running live, the system is loaded into RAM, as are any/all changes you make. Even if you have 4GB RAM, you will eventually run out of space to do anything. RAM is not infinite. This is a hardware limitation.

If you create a liveUSB and have persistence enabled, you can write changes to the USB stick, but the size limitation of the USB stick limits that. Again, this is a hardware limitation.

/media is mounted under /, not /home. xsearch can only search in /home.

the points about the CD were clear to me.
what wasn't clear, is how much memory is being used by the live-session (have 2 GB) and when things might go south. is there a way to check this?

in the mean time I have created an 8 GB persistent liveUSB-stick (on ext3 as ext4 didn't format). all I have to do now is make a note of everything I have done sofar in the live-session, muster courage and reboot (and make all those changes etc. once again).

btw1  can I save files myself to the stick too, or shouldn't this be done?

btw2  while doing all this, xsearch has appeared in the menu!!

Yes, you can save files to the stick. You can save as many data files as you have space for. There will be some limitations to the changes that can be made to system and application program files. I would refer you to the HTML version of the article, but the screenshots are currently missing. Download this pdf for written and visual instructions on creating a live USB from your running live CD.

If you are still running the live CD session, keep running it and do the following steps. Otherwise, reboot from the live CD and follow the steps.

1. Open Synaptic.
2. Install PCLinuxOS-liveusb package. It has very few dependencies. Be sure you also install the dependencies.
3. If you want to have a memory test available on the USB stick, also install memtest86+ package.
4. Close Synaptic.
5. Be sure your USB stick is already formatted in either ext2, ext3 or ext4 filesystem format.
6. Do not insert the USB stick yet. If it is already inserted, unmount it.
7. Start the PCLinuxOS LiveUSB Creator program. It will be in the main menu under More Applications > Configuration.

You should be able to follow the prompts using the downloaded pdf as a guide. However, the tutorial was written for installing from an iso file on a hard drive. When you get to the screen that asks whether to install from an iso file or from a live CD, choose the Use the files from a Live Media option.

The next screen is not shown in the pdf. It will ask you to choose the livecd.sqfs file to use. It is in the root directory of the CD. Just select that file and you'll be on your way. It is important that the process of creating your live USB is not interrupted until it has completed. It may take some time. If I remember right, the live CD source is the quicker of the two.

will this version be different from the one I had created before (does it now maybe come with all the changes I had made??)

btw 1   I (re-)installed the package but nothing was mentioned about dependencies!

btw 2    once more thx for all the patience and the help (hope this thread helps other newbies too).

I wouldn't know, since (a) you never mentioned it and (b) you haven't indicated what you used to create a live USB.

Then all dependencies are already installed.

because my hd is faster than the CD, I used the ISO as I downloaded it.
