Same problem again.

After it started Ok I then closed FF and replaced my old /.mozilla file, reopened it and I was back to where I started with the Crash Reporter

Maurice,

move out .mozilla folder to .mozilla_old again ...    ;)

Same Crash Reporter again

I use Seamonkey for my email and that is now unavailable. It gives

Your SeaMonkey profile cannot be loaded. It may be missing or inaccessible

I reinstalled Thunderbird and trying to start that gives - Segmentation fault

So now I have no working email. It's all getting very messy.

If it helps - I have noticed that when I rename /.mozilla to /.mozilla.old and then restart Firefox a new /.mozilla is not formed. Which is what should happen. no?

I should have noticed this before. Hope it helps.

Got a little further... ;D

Now a new /.mozilla is formed and Firefox starts fine. The problem occurs again when I try to replace my original /.mozilla file. That is when I get the Crash Reporter box.

This is better than having to re-install from a livecd. But I would like to get all my bookmarks and settings back.

Copy your bookmarks and settings from the old to the new one file at a time. Test after each.

Yes I've been looking at those coffeetime and actually got my old profile back and FF popped open on its own somehow, but the next time I tried to open FF I got the same message - already running..... We're very close now. ;D

I tried Neal' suggestion of copying bookmarks over but - a bit too difficult for me.

Maurice,
Open 2 instances of your file manager. In one, open ~/.mozilla/firefox and in the other ~/.mozilla-old/firefox. You will see some folders. Open them one at a time to see what is there. When you see a folder named bookmarkbackups, right click the one in ~/.mozilla-old/firefox/<name-of-folder>/ and choose Copy. Then in ~/.mozilla/firefox/<name-of-folder>/ right click and choose Paste. When asked, choose to overwrite.

Got it Neal. But I thought you meant to extract each of the bookmarks separately from the backups folder. ;D

I've already copied that folder over but it is not recognised. Also whenever I start FF it does not open a new /.mozilla folder and I can't understand this. It doesn't use my/.mozilla folder (with all my bookmarks) but it doesn't open a new one either

Firefox is opening OK now but a brand new one with no bookmarks.

Finally fixed.  ;D 8) ;D

After reading the links coffeetime suggested I took all the excess folders and files out of the /.mozilla folder, just leaving my old bookmarks folder and a few necessary files there. I also deleted Seamonkey which was sharing the same folder and - lo and behold - Firefox finally opened with all my old bookmarks intact.

A great relief. Many thanks to all posters for your help once again - don't know what I'd do without you lot. Probably have to go back to Windows. ::) ;D ;D

Just for the sake or recording this, you can also recover your old passwords bookmarks using Firefox > Bookmarks > Show all bookmarks > Import and backup your bookmarks > Restore | Import ... | Import ...
