Plex Media Server for Linux and the Roku 2
« on: February 11, 2012, 09:41:02 AM »
Hi guys -- we just got a Roku 2 and saw that there is a Linux Media Server called Plex for Ubuntu http://www.plexapp.com/linux/linux-pms-download.php 11.04 - v0.9.5.2.  i've been trying to figure out if this server can be installed under PCLinuxOS.  Here are the suggestions to install...

It's so easy! Add this to your /etc/apt/sources.list file:

deb http://www.plexapp.com/repo lucid main

Then install with the following command:

$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install plexmediaserver

Since this requires setting up a new repo outside of our PCL i am a little leery that this type of hacking will maybe do nasty things to my compu.

Can anyone offer any guidance on this?

Have a great morning!  :)

Why not just a package request?  The devs usually respond pretty quickly.

Have you considered Serviio? <www.serviio.org/> <http://www.serviio.org/download>

Written in Java.  Does not need to be installed to run within PCLOS. I had intended to request it when requests are open again.

Thanks, guys for the posts.  i checked on Serviio and evidently it has a problem...

"I'll make it easy for the next potential customer: don't bother, the Roku isn't DLNA compliant, so it won't work with Serviio or the other DLNA-based servers." from the website serviio.org

Sigh.  Well, have a great afternoon!  :)

Here's a link from the Plex devs...

http://forums.plexapp.com/index.php/topic/34482-the-state-of-plex-media-center-on-linux/

which also has the timeline dates and basically says that things are progressing nicely as in below...

Quote
Milestone Indy has a target date of 2/14/2012. Goals for Indy include the integration of our own fork of libboost, setting up automated package building for multiple distros, and beginning integration of our code fork with the main Plex branch, all with the goal of being able to release binary beta packages and begin public beta-testing.

Milestone Monarch (Plex for your $ARCH!) is currently targeted at 3/15/2012 (the Ides of March). Monarch should represent our project maturing to the point that we can integrate our code fully into the Plex tree and see the beginning of regular Linux Plex Media Center releases.

Patience, patience.  Gotta wait.  Gotta wait.  Have a great evening!  :)
