I'm being flooded with packets from Amazon Cloud Computing
« on: February 12, 2012, 07:11:27 PM »
My Linksys router log is showing a constant flow of incoming packets going to port 80 and 443.

IP number 50.18.177.164 is going to Port 80
IP number 50.18.48.68 going to Port 443

Whois: for these IP numbers shows:

OrgTechName:   Amazon EC2 Network Operations.

I've shut down just about everything that has anything to do with networking and the packets persist.

I did a search around this forum and found a few posts about Amazon Elastic Cloud computing.  (Like this one: http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,99910.0.html ).    Is there something in PCLOS that is causing Amazon to flood my computer with 'Cloud computing' packets?  If so, can it be disabled?  Or, is this something to do with my ISP?

EDIT..    I shut down my Linux box and fired up a windows computer..  The packets keep coming, so it's not Linux!!      Does anyone know why these packets are flowing my way?

port 80 correspond to http service and port 443 correspond to https service, look like a (D?)DOS attack or a SCAN searching for websites ... (possibly vulnerable), however if you don't run a web server ... it should not be a big problem for you.

To some extent this type of scan are quite common, depending on your router settings this type of flood/scan should be completely blocked, routers defaults settings usually block all incoming traffic.

Ah..  OK..  That's it..   With the Linux computer shut down, I have no SSH open, so the packets are doing nothing and the router is simply detecting them..   I guess it is some sort of DOS attack, but it hasn't slowed anything down on my end..

There's an address at Amazon for abuse... I'll fire 'em off an e-mail.

Thanks....
