[Solved] Can't select higher resolution
« on: February 07, 2012, 08:14:28 PM »
Hi Everyone,

I just updated my fiance's desktop and now I can't get the monitor to her standard 1900x1200 resolution. For obvious reasons, this is a bit of a tense moment so any help is appreciated.

The computer has a GeForce FX 5200 video card (as shown under Module in PCC).

I checked xorg.conf and it shows the resolution mode as an option. However, when I go to configure your computer, it simply doesn't allow me to select anything higher than  1024x768.

Also, I don't know if this helps or not, the monitor is connected via vga cable.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Addendum: I tried deleting xorg.conf and then running XFdrake but same result. However, when it did the "test the configuration" the size of the font was correct at 1900x1200. I rebooted as asked, and back to the same old problem!

Hi,

it appear you are loosing the configuration upon reboot, reconfigure again your resolution using XFdrake then apply the fix suggested here:

Please try again, it has always worked for several user with the same issue:

first copy & paste the following command:
Code: [Select]
chattr -i /etc/X11/xorg.conf

then configure the resolution using XFdrake,

then copy and paste the following:
Code: [Select]
chattr +i /etc/X11/xorg.conf
finally reboot

Hi,

Just tried it again. Still no luck :-(.

What's funny, is under resolution in the PCC, it shows me the correct one (it should be 1680x1050). Apologies for giving the wrong one earlier. But under configure your desktop it still only goes up to 1024x768. Not sure what I'm doing wrong... in XFdrake, I selected the appropriate Dell Monitor etc.. and the worst part is that it "tests" correctly!

[SOLVED] Re: Can't select higher resolution
« Reply #9 on: February 07, 2012, 10:13:30 PM »
Hi,

Ok, this is going to be really silly, but I concentrated on the following line here since I thought maybe I can try some xrendr thing:

(WW) NVIDIA(0): Unable to get display device CRT-0's EDID

Anyway, among the posts I found that sometimes longer vga cables can't send the EDID correctly. I swapped out to a different cable and it worked. Sorry for troubling you to what amounted to be a hardware issue! Thank you for your help though....

I keep meaning to update all the hardware, cables etc..but I always end up waiting until it's no longer rescuable at all...
