Why does 'KDF' start showing all Windows partitions
« on: February 07, 2012, 12:06:30 AM »
Hi KDF is showing windows partitions even though they are not in FSTAB?
I am running 2011.09 updated to 2012.02 on a Pavilion DV7 laptop.
It did this in 2011 and still does it in 2012.
Your thoughts much appreciated.

it doesnt look for partitions in "/etc/fstab", it looks for them in "/etc/mtab". This means it shows "mounted" partitions since mounted partitions are added in the latter file.

how do you mount them?

mount command has an option for not adding mounted partitions in "/etc/mtab". The options is "-n" or "--no-mtab"

if your partitions are in "/etc/fstab", you can add the option there and they will mount without adding to "/etc/mtab" and kdf will not show them

If you mount them manually, you can add the option to get the effect

Hi muungwana,
Sorry for coming back but since the Linux only partitions are mounted in fstab I cannot see how I can stop the windows partitions from being mounted.
There is no mount point for windows systems in fstab.

Hi Gezza,

kdf show only mounted partitions, but partitions that aren't in fstab are not mounted in my system, it could means that on your system the windows partitions are mounted using a different mechanism: check "Device notifier" settings -> "Automounting".

Hi  to all,
I do not have 'device notifier' installed under 2011.09 upg to 2012.02.
Indeed I cannot find it in synaptic!
As I said before, I only have local Linux drives and nfs drives mounted in fstab.
Any further thought gratefully received.
