LXDE 2012.01 Copied to USB?
« on: February 06, 2012, 10:56:28 AM »
I have downloaded this version of LXDE and the ISO file is now sitting on my hard drive. I want to have LXDE on a netbook that I've "inherited". Netbooks, of course, do not come with CD/DVD drives. Can I just copy the ISO from its position in my Download folder directly to a USB? Is it that easy?

I hope so...

Hi,
In your system you have a program having for name PCLinuxOS Live USB. And you could have Gparted. Format your USB stick to ext3 with Gparted, or with drakdisk (which is in the PCC) and after that remove the stick, start PCLinuxOS Live USB and follow the instructions.

You will find it at menu > Applications > Other Applications > Configuration > PCLinuxOS Live USB.

Regards,
Mélodie

/btw, welcome to the forums !

Not much information to go on there. Is the Download folder on a PCLinuxOS installation? If so, then run the PCLinuxOS-LiveUSB Creator -- menu - more applications - configuration -
If not, use the forum search with the term "liveusb." You should get some good results fast.

You can't just copy the .iso file it must be burned you will need a program call unetbootin to burn it to you usb stick then install it to the H.D.

do a search for unetbootin in syaptic and install that.

then burn the .iso to the usb stick.

Well, yes ....you could,  but you would only be "saving" the .ISO - - - no - will not load onto the netbook drive - that way....
I hope we are talking a LINUX MACHINE hard drive , and not Windows....
Also you might want to post here the make and exact model of NETBOOK - I seem to recall that a few are proprietary types and do weird things when the OEM O/S is fooled with...

You should be SURE linux will work on that model , by inquiring in this forum....

-and before you proceed , please do a search as Neal says - to be edified on the subject....There are MANY members here with successful NETBOOK installs.

...There are different bios' and the book should be set to "BOOT FROM USB" if not allready.

..."unebootin" is one methodology ...johnboy{a member here} has created another easier app for pclos =

...If you are running LXDE 2012.01 on a desktop (or lappy)   - Then as Melodie says there is a LIVE USB CREATOR app already in the menu....

To be more specific {for LXDE} :  PC (menu) > More Applications > Configuration > PClinux OS LIVE USB CREATOR - version 0.9.7.....and read/ follow the instructions.
I believe the USB drive should be 4 gigs or larger....8's are cheap now.
--- the next step {after loading it onto the jumpdrive} is to TRY it "LIVE"- on the netbook - to see if everything "works" out of the box, so to speak.....{actually seeing if the computers hardware is fully supported...}
-after running it, and it is to your satisfaction, then do a permanent install.

good luck!   8)

Hmmm, not too clear on what I'm trying to do. I have the LXDE downloaded and sitting on my laptop. The netbook doesn't have a CD/DVD drive but I want to load LXDE on it. The HDD is blank.

As I'm running LXDE on the laptop, I thought that I could just copy the .iso files from my Downloads folder onto a USB and then run it. I'd select INSTALL from the main screen and let it do its thing.

I have the feeling from the replies so far, that this would not be kosher. It looks like I'd have to burn it to a DVD from the laptop and then use PCLOS Live USB to do this. No other choices?

Did you have installed an Linux system, like PCLinuxOS?

If YES
Then use PCLinuxOS Live USB Creator
If NO
You must look, what MS will bring you...

From your running LXDE, prepare the USB stick with an EXT partition, then use LiveUSB Creator to write the new downloaded ISO to the USB stick.

Select to install Grub to the MBR when asked.

You should then be able to use the USB stick to boot the other PC.

moresouth,
You do not need to burn it to DVD (or CD - it is CD-sized :)). If you want it on a usb stick, you can use PCLInuxOS LiveUSB Creator or other program to do this. You can think of this as a kind of install or as a kind of burning to usb. Either way, the point is that you do not have to burn to CD/DVD.

Haven't been back to this question for a month or so (and see I used a different "name" on the original posting -- galloping senility, it seems). The netbook which was given to me had window$ something on it. The unit basically gave up so put it into the recycle bin at the dump. Since it cost $0.00 to obtain, I had to pay $10.00 (Cdn) to dispose of it (along with other household "stuff") at the dump.

I am, however, interested in using USB rather than CD/DVD for downloads. Some comments on the responses to this thread:

Melodie: I have read the thread and printed out a "Writer" copy in the Forum on what to do but missed the poster's name. It is interesting and should work. I will try it when I get back to my computer at home.

Neal: the download is on my LXDE computer at home. It is sitting in the "download" folder so I'll use the PCLinuxOS - liveUSB Creator to see what happens. I'll then have a backup though I feel I'll not need it. As it will work like a live CD/DVD, I can demonstrate it to those who are still on M$...

kc1di: I discovered that just copying the individual files from a download folder to a USB will not work. I guess there's something very important missing  to enable the USB to actually run. I tried. I've learned...

JNibski: Thank you for your very detailed response. Sorry that I cannot answer the questions re the netbook -- it was an Acer of some vintage. It will RIP in the recycle bin.

I will mark this thread as "solved" as the original details no longer apply. When I get back home, I'll play with the liveUSB Creator and see what happens.

Thank you, djohnston. I hadn't yet had the chance to download and read the March issue of the magazine. The article looks like it'll do the trick and I'll study it in detail when I get home.

Much appreciated.

The adventure continues...

I have read the March issue of PCLinuxOS Magazine -- very interesting -- and paid attention to djohnston's article re the LiveUSB Creator. From the download (Md5Sum matches) of the 2012 version of LXDE, I used his outline to "burn" it to a USB (SanDisk 4GB) formatted in the Control Centre "Local Disks, Manage disk partitions to EXT4 (the only choice). All 4 GB (actually 3.9 it tells me...) were this with no partitions set. I then used the file from "Downloads" in KDE to write to the USB. It indicated it was done and gave me four files: Boot with Grub (16 files) gfxnemu and memtest 4.2.0; LXDE0 (I think it's a zero) with 52 files and another LXDE0.sqfs that won't reveal it's files or folders. (There's also that obtuse "Lost & Found" folder sitting on the USB drive...)

It seems to be all there but it won't boot. I get a black screen with a flashing "_" cursor. Did I miss something? I followed all of djohnson's stepsin the magazine and double-checked before continuing. Before I erase the USB and try it again, is anything obvious? Do I need to provide more information?

By the way, my CD/DVD drive (ancient) quit on this (early-mid 2000) PC so I'm going to use USBs (hopefully) to help friends, associates to move from that other OS... However, I need to be able to burn a USB.

Your assistance is always most appreciated.

Hi Far North,

it's not clear to me what you mean by ext4 is the only choice, actually drakdisk allow you to choose the type of partition, anyway ext4 is fine.

A second point, if I understand correctly you have used the "whole device" and not a partition, that's could be the problem ... really I've not tested it ...

Finally, when trying to boot from your USB stick, at grub menu press F3 (options), add the following parameters:
Code: [Select]
noquiet  splash=versbose  debug
that will provide some feedback about what is going on while booting ...

That's because you have done nothing to make the USB stick bootable!  Live USB will take care of that for you, and the USB stick will work exactly like a Live CD.
