I also use Alsa .....  PulseAudio does not replace it.

As far as I am aware you have three choices ....

1.  use Pulse Audio so you can select the desired streams through the GUI

2. use a loop wire as described by others in this thread so that you get the speaker sound sent back into a sound source from which to record

3. get down into the guts of some files and create a virtual loop in some Alsa config files, from which you can then record.

As an aside ...... how sure are you that the source of the sound you wish to record is in stereo?
Is it actually arriving at your PC in stereo? .....  in other words can you listen to it on headset or speakers in true stereo?

I'm 100% sure. I can tell by the sound.

I don't recall ......  is it that you get dual channel mono or are you getting single channel recordings?

Can you link to a specific example so I know we are both recording from the same stream?

As far as I can determine there is no stereo content in that video ......  it is dual channel mono.

Any of the files I have checked from Youtube are the same ......  although I suppose there must be stereo content on some.

But how do you explain the difference in the sound quality of my recording? It sounds "tinny" when I play it back, & I never saw this happen on my old computer.

I don't .....  and would not even attempt to, as there are too many variables over which I have no control.

If you wish to compare what you record with the original, try downloading the video and listening to it locally to see if there is any difference.
You can even use an app like PACPL to extract the audio from the file and see how that sounds.

As mentioned in an earlier post, there is even an app which will download the audio only.

Essentially, you seem to have no trouble recording in stereo ....
