Help needed with changing desktop theme.
« on: April 17, 2011, 01:02:36 PM »
After installing PCLinuxOS KDE 2010.12 I have tried to set a new desktop
background (my desktop background is presently "Air Aurora Splash Screen"
by default after this new installation) by going into the "configure your desktop"
application and selecting "workspace appearance" and then "desktop theme".
After using the "get new themes" function to install additional desktop themes,
I used the console in super user mode to switch to a new theme, but the command
"switch-themes -l" shows only 3 available themes (details, PClinuxOS, text) no
matter how many other desktop themes I install using the "Customize the desktop
theme /get new themes" function.
Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong here in trying to change the appearance
of my desktop background?

Well, I think you're trying to do different things together....

switch-themes is meant to change the plymouth GFXboot theme (google for example "pclinuxos switch-themes")...
=> that's the animation during boot (normally the bull that appears....: there exists an application for doing that ("ezswitch") and you can do a search for 'plymouth' in Synaptic to get extra themes for that)
More examples: http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php?topic=76205.0

Now your KDE Desktop background (the problem you have at the moment)...:
It's not necessary to change the whole KDE theme, just the background. See if the following is possible:
Right click on the Desktop and select "Folder View Settings"; then select "Wallpaper" (normally automatically selected) and change your background (you have there as many options as you want...)

That worked for me, Thanks.

Some things are really just simple to do in Linux. What you just did was the simplest way... just believe that there are alternative ways.

Very helpful. I spent an hour trying to find out where to go to change the wallpaper. I should have looked here first.

You can use ordinary pictures (.jpg etc) as wallpaper.
