apt-sources-list question
« on: January 31, 2012, 03:46:54 AM »
No idea if this is the right place to post this, but here it goes:

I installed apt-sources-list as per Neal's announcement:

http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,102057.0.html

and found there is a package named apt-sources-update installed. From the description (didn't read the code) they seem to do pretty much the same, but supposedly they don't, as otherwise apt-sources-update would have been removed.

Can you shade a light on this, Neal?

Thank you.

apt-sources-list just updates your sources.list while apt-sources-update does that + a speed test of all mirrors but I think apt-sources-update is currently not working and needs to be fixed.

that means you should backup your file sources.list in the directory /etc/apt/ to some safe location because it contains your PASS account access details. However, apt-sources-list will make a backup of that file in the same directory.

If you have a PASS account, you should make a copy of your credentials (PASS login/connection line in /etc/apt/sources.list) and put it in a safe place. This is is in case there is a disaster of some kind. On installation, apt-sources-list will make a backup copy of your old sources list. You'll get a message displayed in synaptic telling you that it was saved as "sources.list.rpmsave."

To get a PASS Account you need to make a Donation to PCLinux of at least $25.00
this will get you a 1 year access to the PASS Server ( this is where all updates are
put up for download first) generally 7 to 10 days ahead of them being sent to the
rest of the repository's.
When the Donation is received by Texstar then he will email you your Pass Account information
and instructions as to how to access the PASS Server.

Donations and the Pass server are not available for the moment. Once they can be used again, there will sure be a message in general news and announcements. So watch that board if you are interested in donating and getting a pass account.

Thanks, Neal.

And what about the possible duplicity of apt-sources-list and apt-sources-update?

If they won't fight, that's fine enough for me and I'll just leave them in place.

Thanks

Duplicity? :o Dishonest behavior? Where did that come form? ???
apt-sources-list installs the newest version of the sources list.
apt-sources-update simply checks the mirrors to find the fastest.
The 2 are not the same. There is no duplicity. >:(

Hi Neal,

thanks for the clarification and sorry for the wrong choice of vocabulary ;D ;D I meant doubling, of course.

Note to self: look up vocabulary if unsure and don' t use false friends!
