Yes, nice job. Even I can follow it !

I would just like to suggest you add the information about format to ext2 or ext3 for persistent mode, at the beginning of the tutorial. Then it can reused, copied to wiki, to pclos mag (+1 Xenaflux) translated..

Plus a line or two , warning about the minimum size USB for version a, b or c of PCLinuxOS.

Think I'm gonna try it tonight.( first buy a stick )

That was a great step by step guide DJ.

Using my newly formatted-to-ext3 usb stick I followed it precisely and the resulting remaster turned out just as it should have done. In my previous efforts I had ticked the wrong choice for the grub setup. This time I got the correct one and on checking the contents in Dolphin the grub menu was there exactly as in your guide.

So, confident of a great result, I removed and reinserted the stick and restarted.

And.....  it would not even boot. The normal boot menu came up as though there was no usb device there at all.

I shut down and rebooted six or seven times, changing the usb port each time but it would not work.

This latest remaster seems just fine. My previous attempts with a defective boot menu did at least boot up and attempt to start. I was so confident I would be reporting success in this post and now I'm not sure of my next move. Reckon I'll just sleep on it. ??? ::) ;D

I would say a file system can get corrupted ? I am not an expert on the matter.... I suppose someone knowing how electronic items can stay healty or get sick would have more answers. Fact : it is sometimes a good solution.

Have you tried your ISO in Virtualbox, to be sure it is good ?

No I haven't melodie - too much trouble. ;D And it should be solvable without having to do that.

It may be Maurice but ......  if the ISO is corrupted (or if the copy on the USB is corrupted) then no matter what you do it will never boot properly.

The suggestion to try VBox to boot the ISO is to eliminate the possibility that the remaster is corrupted and this is what is causing the problem.

An alternative is to extract the ISO to a folder and then do an MD5sum on the livecd.sqfs file, and do the same for the <name>.sqfs file on the USB.
They should both match - exactly.
If different then the corruption occurred during the copy procedure to the USB.

****

DJ,
       Great write-up!  Thank you!

Suggestion .....  At the very beginning you might consider specifying that the USB device to be used needs to have at least one EXT partition set up of suitable size to contain the OS being installed to it.

OK, I got a 8Gb SanDisk just now.
Installed LXDE 2012.1 as per instructions.( Downloaded virgin ISO )
No problems. Booted up, configured internet and accessed the www.

So, the program( 0.9.7 ) itself is working.
One thing less to think about for Maurice.

Maurice, I got the very same thing, but on my computer I have an option to press F12 on startup, which brings up a separate bootmenu.
With no USB inserted, it shows : HD , CD , and 4 usb ports.
With USB inserted, it shows an extra entry : Sandisk USB

Maybe you have an option like that but overlooked it ?

note: changing boot options in BIOS have no effect on it.

Great guide djohnston  :)

Maurice I reread all thread and I'm with Just18, probably the .iso file has something wrong. Check it in VB or burn a rewritable DVD if you have one at hand.
I shall pass this way but once;
any good therefore that I can do,
or any kindness that I can show
let me not defer nor neglect it,
for I shall not pass this way again.

I agree with Xenaflux. If you are not seeing the GRUB boot menu from the USB drive, it is because the option to boot the computer from the USB drive was not selected. Please check your BIOS settings and try the F12 key at computer startup.

Gee -- thanks fellas for all the replies -- I'm in good hands. ;D

That gives me a lot to work on so my next reply may not be for a while.

I tried the usb on my wife's machine and got the same problem. I think your general consensus may be correct - a corrupt remaster so I might redo it from scratch.

Thanks again - Maurice

Today I made a remaster with mylivecd about 1G
I used a new USB 4G and put, wih unetbootin, this iso on stick.
One machine perfect another boot problems.
I find out this problem machine wanted only fat16 as USB boot item (floppy ?)
So I formatted the 4G USB as bootable fat16, unetbootin again and problem solved.
Only, fat16 has a maximum file size.............

I came across a 'somewhat' similar problem which was solved by putting a FAT partition first and the Linux OS on the second partition.

I never came across a situation like you have described.

Is it an old machine?  Make/model so I might look out for it, please?

How do I extract the ISO? When I click any of the 'extract to' items nothing happens? Thanks

Tried that - got some unintelligible (to me) verbiage but no separate boot menu

I tried unetbootin earlier but it hung when I formatted to fat32 and I could get no further.

If you just plug in the USB stick (no attempt to boot from it) just as a storage drive.  From what I can understand all is ok and you should be able to "look" at the content with Dolphin or Konqueror. You would then be able to copy the sqfs file to say your Desktop or another directory on your system.  Then the tricky question of running the md5sum, but first see if this suggestion helps.

This method we will call extract  ;D
