Mark,
One problem here is I installed the same packages and get no broken packages. I've done this on 2 machines.

So, hmm...... try this:
mark the broken packages for removal. Apply. Reload synaptic. Mark the packages for installation. Apply.

ok ive uploaded a new task-xfce ... should fix this issue now ... not sure why yours is showing that you have broken packages unless you are missing the xfce4 in your sections ... then it would try and install the lesser version for xfce4.6 ... gonna do this in VM and see if i get this issue ...

Well, it must have been the bacon.:)  Neal's fix worked. I uninstalled and re-installed the broken packages and all is well.:)

But....
Wait, wait, wait.  xfce4 in sections?  I did not do this.  My sincere apologies.  I need to add this line "xfce4" at the end of the sections line listed in the repo being used, correct?

I'll check now.  However, Synpatic is not launching in xfce.  It tells me I need to be root user.  No password dialog comes up.

I jumped back into KDE and the same thing.  Synaptic not launching.  Rebooted just now...

Okay, Synpatic launching...

Repository for heanet reads:

URI: http://ftp.heanet.ie/pub/pclinuxos/apt/
Distribution:  pclinuxos/2010
Sections:  main updates nonfree kde4 games xfce4

I just checked and this is true for both laptop and desktop.  I'll need to double check my notebook.

So, apparently, I did not err because PCLinuxOS made sure packages were pulled from xfce4.

If I'm incorrect, someone please signify by taking away my plate of bacon.:)

Mark,
Did you install apt-sources-list? If so, then you will have xfce4 in Sections. Why? Because it was added in the new sources list. :) In fact, that was the main reason for creating the new sources list. :D

Oh, yes.  I did that on both systems.  I know this to be true because it wiped out my PASS account.  In addition, a quick search in Synaptic shows tht it is installed.

So, I'll give the entire process a go on my desktop.

Mark,
Look in /etc/apt/sources.list.rpmsave to see if your PASS credentials are there. Should be.

decided to do the pdate n my notebook firt as I talke it to the office.

So, I installed the new sources list.  At the same time, there was an update for Live USB.  Not sure ow tht got there, but it updated, as well.

I refreshed and then did all the updates for xfce.  I checked to make sure xfce4 was listed.  it was.

I reloaded twice to makes ue I had the latest packages.

After download and install, I received this message:

Quote
While installing package thunar-1.3.0-1pclos2012:

error: unpacking of archive failed on file /usr/share/doc/Thunar/html/da/images: cpio: rename failed - Is a directory

While installing package PCLinuxOS-liveusb-0.9.7-1pclos2012:

If you are upgrading from XFCE4 4.6.x, please open a
terminal and type xfce4-session-logout to logout so
the panel can be reset for XFCE4 4.8.x. Thanks!

On relaunch of Synaptic, it reported to broken packages.  Thunar and Thunar-volman.  I completely removed both, and ten re-installed.

Everything in Synpatic came up fine.  No errors or broken packages.

I booted into xfce and all appears to work well.  However, again, Synapic in xfce does not launch.  it states it need root permission with no dialog coming up.

Thanks, Neal.:0  I'l look.:)  But I have my PASS info saved in another file and backed up on a portable drive.:)  I learned my lesson form last time.:)  BTW, is PASS back up?  I know I need to renew in about a month or so.:)

Sproggy, as you can see form my previous post, same thing happened on my notebook. So, Neal's fix corrected everything then?

right click on the launcher ... choose properties .... click the - (remove) button and then click the +(add) button and type in synaptic ;) click ok and all shall be well with the world :D

and yes the reinstall works :D

Thanks.:)  I'll give that a try.:)

I just updated my third system, the desktop.  The exact same thing happened.  Again, Neal's fix worked.  I had to completely uninstall Thunar, Thunar-shares-plugin, and Thunar-volman.  Then, I re-installed all three and things are running fine.:)

The new desktop looks great.:)  I just need to swap bottom panel for top and vice-versa.  Too much like Gnome.
