No sound after new mini KDE install [solved]

I installed and updated the latest minime KDE to my partner's system. It uses Multimedia audio controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8233/A/8235/8237 AC97 Audio Controller (rev 60), according to lspci. I think I've installed everything necessary for sound but get nothing: no opening sound, Net audio, nothing. The Phonon test gives nothing. Sound worked fine before the reinstall. PCCC says it's using the ALSA "snd_via82xx" driver.

I've tried everything I can think of, and nothing makes any difference. I'm tempted to just install the full distro if nothing else works. Any thoughts before the drastic step?

Just to discount it - have you checked the kmix volume level?

And have you run alsaconf from a konsole to let it run through/rebuild the drivers?

Edit - alsaconf should be run as root

right-click the speaker-icon at the bottom right of the screen, click on Mixer, and ensure that the volume levels of both, Master and PCM are up, and not disabled (small icon at the bottom of each column)

Checked the mixer and ran alsaconf again, no results. Thanks for the thoughts. Maybe I'll burn a Mint or Kubuntu disk and see if it works live with sound. I'd wonder about the sound card, but it seems too unlikely that it would go bad just after an OS reinstall. And I think alsaconf would notice a problem..

On my newest machine with multiple sound devices, the devices are recognized differently with different versions of PCLOS.

An upgrade would cause some devices to not work no matter what I tried.

Kmix would not allow me to get them to work again.

I found that the only way to get them working without using  the command line and a great deal more knowledge than I possess was to use QasMixer.

It shows things that I had no knowledge of and allowed me to enable outputs that did not show any other way.

It will take a lot of reading and experimenting to figure out what it does but it will do the trick.

I just hope that it will become available for the 64 bit version of PCLOS.

If it has a HDMI connection then it is possible that this is the default sound sink.

maybe some hardware specs of the machine might eliminate that possibility.

I shrivel with embarrassment. Turns out the problem was a jack on the computer went bad. Switching to another one fixed the problem. My only defense is that this came right after a new install so I assumed it was a software problem. On the upside , I think all the ideas my error inspired made for a better sound system. Thanks to all who responded.

Glad you are sorted ......  get used to the embarrassment .......  computers do that to us all
