parallel hp1100 not recognised
« on: January 20, 2012, 04:48:34 AM »
On a kde fully updated installation I've plugged an HP1100 parallel printer
and... the only thing I can "locate" is a (hehe) "hp1100 scanner" (from the scanner menu-printer menu is empty!!!)  ??? :P
what am I doing wrong ?
task printing is fully installed(all printers)
the problem exists with the KDE live cd too!! :o
 ???

I just booted from my 2011.09 KDE CD
Opened Firefox
Went to http://localhost:631
and set up my HP6P laserjet parallel port printer

I have used CUPS to set up my printers for the last couple of years. I have found that doing it from PCC has been hit or miss lately.

in my case it has been a miss or miss situation for  more than a week! :o

...since I don't know what to do next  in http://localhost:631 (what someone has to do then??)
...
I was ready to uninstall

fortunately last time I tried pcc
showed under the local printers the hp1100 machine

(was it maybe because I had previously scanned and located the..."hp1100 scanner" ???:-\

Well don't re-install just yet unless you like the exercise  ;D ;D

CUPS can be a bit overwhelming to start with but when you get to understand the basics it works extremely well. CUPS the only program that has not let me down on printers, if I have a problem here I am in real trouble.

Search the forum on printers there will be a lot of information, but a hint.

Administration -> Add a printer

password: <your administrator password>

Then follow your nose.

Would be handy to know if you are you good at using the command line or working in a konsole?  :D
