I downloaded the latest OB ISO and burnt it to disc. I did a clean install onto a 2ghz AMD 3200 with a gig of ram and an nvidia Geforce 6200. Absolutely no issues - 3d up and running and google-earth just flies.
The same install disc was then put into a 3ghz Intel P4 with 2gig of ram and an nvidia Geforce 7600 GS card. It lost its way on boot - couldn't configure X. In the end I booted the cd in fb-thingy mode which got me to the desktop and allowed a clean install. I had to set it to the nv driver, and then got the 7600 card working, but no way can I get 3d running; plus I seem to be stuck in 1024x768 mode.
The reason I posted here is because the live cd couldn't boot without going into limp mode, so I was wondering if there is anything OB about it, although I doubt it. The driver for the 7600 falls into the same category as the 6200, and that went perfectly.
Did a search through the forum for any hints but didn't find much. One was a reference to the nvidia control panel but I can't find that anywhere, and someone else used the 173.xx driver with their 7600 GS but that has me stumped as I thought the dkms-nvidia-current was the appropriate one. By the way I did update the systems immediately after the installs so everything should be up-to-date.
Any ideas, or should I sling this problem elsewhere? Advice on the "elsewhere" would be good too

PS - Amazing what Mélodie has been able to squeeze onto a cd. LibreOffice and all
