Problems with icons - KDE4
« on: January 13, 2012, 02:25:12 PM »
Hi all,

I reinstalled PCLOS on my parents' box after facing troubles with a database corruption.

I kept the /home partition, but encountered one annoying problem:

The Firefox and KMyMoney icons don't show, instead they display "a sheet of paper".

I renamed the .kde4 folder but that didn't help either. Not sure if the setting (in "configure your desktop") to load the desktop as in last session has to do something with it. Disabled it but still no joy.

Someone with an idea?

TIA, in fact TYVMIA  :)

All that is is good. PCLinuxOS is.

Try deleting those icons from the panel, then add them anew.

Of what use be there for joy, if not for the sharing thereof?

Hi Old Polack,

thanks for the reply. Been on the machine again today and tried as you suggested. No fun  :(

What I haven't tried, but might do would be to delete the panel and create a new one. However, I'm confused that deleting the .kde4 folder didn't help.

 ??? ??? ???

Completely clueless...

Will the icons display for a new user?

Don't now, as I can't check now.

I'll try both, create a new panel and try a new user, and see what happens.

Changing the panel will not change the desktop.  To get an icon on the desktop, right-click the application in the applications menu and select "Add to Desktop."

not sure if a different iconset could be the problem

have you tried to edit the button and point it to the right icon?

I encounter this now and then in KDE-mini (too inquisitive). Old-Polack is right delete and place again from Menu. If they still show the sheet of paper as Icon, the icon very likely has also left the programs in the Menu, if they are still there.

If the programs are in Menu do they have the right Icon?

Notice this follows along what ternor suggests (and T6 )

32 bit: KDE (older) & various KDE-mini, ASUSTek P5P41D Rev X.0x, BIOS AMI0207 07/21/2009, "Pentium(R) Dual-Core CPU E5300 @ 2.60GHz", nVidia GeForce 9600 GT, 2x1GB Seagate Technology 1000528AS HDD
TV CompuPro VideoMate Vista E700 (not working in Linux), Acer X243HD LCD Screen

I hadn't thought of that.  The applications in the menu may need to be allocated an icon.  Right-click the menu and select "Edit applications."

Great post, I had forgotten that if the icon has disappeared ( I was assuming there might be "sheet of paper" here too as icon) that really set me into a muddle until I realised that where the icon ought to be, you need to click to select a new one.

I am not sure if that still applies to the latest ISO, this one a learnt many moons ago. Will take some time before I forget.   :D

When you are in the edit pane, there may be two linnes/fields looking short, the spare space fitting the square icon perfectly, but it has the pane background colour or had in my case but click here anyway.

Hi all,

thanks for the suggestions.

  - I have deleted the icon and put it in the panel again, but still the same.
  - In the menu the icons are there.
  - I don't want the icons on the desktop, I want them in the panel.
  - When I right-click the icon to edit it, I will see the correct icon in the settings window.

This is a KDE-Mini 2011.09 install, the former was KDE MiniMe 2011.07 iirc.

Will try new panel, new user, and deleting .kde4 folder once more and report back.

Thanks for your thoughts everyone.
