As mentioned I do not have raid, only identical drives. Also have two identical SSDs as boot devices. One for windows other for linux.

Unplugged the raptors & the install began. Finished, rebooted, now it would not go past the boot screen with the blue bar. Bar filled up then it sat there doing nothing.

Used ctrl alt del & when it was rebooting got this, 'could not log boot up - address already in use.'

Plugged the raptors back in & it got to about half way along the blue bar & went into a very slow crawl. Gave up in the end.

Something's not right here. You say you have two boot devices. You can only have one active boot device. How, exactly, are those SSDs set up? You might as well explain what OSes you already have installed and what drives they are on. What size is each drive? Are the Raptors SATA and the SSD drives IDE interface?

It sounds to me like those Raptors are, in fact, set up as software RAID. Check your BIOS.

It sounds to me like those Raptors are, in fact, set up as software RAID. Check your BIOS.

In order for your SATA drives to be seen when connected to the particular sockets being used, it may be that you have to have the RAID controller set to on, in BIOS, but then the RAID mode would need to be set to JBOD (Just a Bunch Of Disks/Drives) to be seen as individual, unrelated drives.

FullMonty is identical to: the standard KDE + additional drivers and software. Maybe some of the RAID-related tools cause a problem there, or more likely you have a bad burn because there are too many strange behaviors mentioned, which is not normal. 
Another suggestion: since the standard KDE installs fine, install it, do a full update, and finally in Synaptic search for and install fullmonty-light, with more info provided here, then customize and setup the system to your liking.

I meant to sat I have two SSDs to hold the operating systems. One for windows 7 only (boot record here).  The other for linux.

The raptors are SATA & bios is set AHCI. They were set up as raid. I only securely wiped one of them as the other was being picked up OK in Linux. I might have to remove the data, wipe them & have another go. Can't remember which one I wiped so will have to do both.

I'll try that first & give monty another go then get back.

Any drive that has been set up as a RAID device will have such a signature in the MBR. It's why you get the ERROR: isw: wrong number of devices in RAID set message.

NOTE TO SELF: When someone claims to have problems installing from a CD, first question should be "How are your drives set up?". Second question should be "What speed did you burn the CD at?".

That's what I can't figure out. Both the SSDs were securely wiped so the mbr should be gone also? Does anything get written to the other raid drives, eg the raptor?

Still transferring data over. Damn it's a slow process.

Thanks for all the help everyone. Really do appreciate it.    Sorry for all the confusion on my part. 

Not doing the secure erase on both raptors was the problem.

I now have a working FullMonty.
