tp-link TL-WN722N
« on: January 12, 2012, 04:06:09 PM »
Hi there!

I have a problem with this TP-LINK wireless N USB Adapter TL-WN722N.

The problem is, that this tplink want not to work with my pclinux os.

The facts:
netbook: Toshiba NB500 with intel atom N455, 1giga RAM......
usb wifi adapter: TP-Link TL-WN722N with atheros ar9271 chipset
pclinuxos 2010
kernel: 2.6.33.7

lsusb shows, that the wifi adapter is in the usb port. the network controller doesn´t. and here the problem starts. couldn´t set up the network, because it seems that the network center doesn´t know, that i put the wifi dongle to usb.
i downloaded some ar9271.fw (htc_ar9271.fw, ar9271.fw) installed it to the firmwares, nothing happened.
the NDISwrapper also allways says: atheros firmware install incorrect.

so i have this @!?% tp-link and i don´t know...throw it under the train or burn it down..? or what could i do with it? any solutions?

One thing you can do is to post the output of lsusb command, so the device can be identified and possibly the correct driver will be suggested, (I'm guessing ath9k_htc ... available on kernel 2.6.38.8-pclos3.*)

The firmware ar9271.fw and htc_9271.fw are available on PCLinuxOS repo's, ( package kernel-firmware-extra-20110428-1pclos2011) ...
Right now I don't know if you have already ran aptupgrade, if not a reinstallation from latest ISO will be required.

At very least, download the latest PCLinuxOS ISO and test your device directly from the live system.  ;)

Upgrade your system fully and then install a newer kernel.

* note: Synaptic does not upgrade the kernel automatically. You must select a new kernel to install it.

I have cursed that company before (mine is TL-WN721N).
However, ones upon a time I updated my kernel to the latest available and .... it worked all of the sudden.
I so think a kernel update is your probable solution.
Other wise you could try the windows driver that came with it using ndiswrapper.

ok guys, so i understood that i was a little bit stupid when i did aptupdate, so i did it wrong.  :)
now i have to install pclos  2011.
may be a stupid question but i think you can pardon it to a newbie like me: how can i reinstall my pclos 2010 to pclos 2011 without losses?
(please write me down the whole process as you will write it to an "idiot")
thanks

Tamiral,
It would be better to download and install the latest, 2011 ISO and install from it. The latest 2010 ISO (December 2010) will not have a clear upgrade path.

If you have partitions for /(root) and /home it is easy to install the latest. Use existing partitions and DO NOT format /home. Uncheck that option during the process. Your files etc. should remain in tact that way. Paranoid as I once was, I renamed the user folders (i.e Me to MeX) and created new users with the very same name. Use the same user id nummer as you have now for every user. You can check that in PCC > Manage users before re-install.
I then fired up each user once and went back to root to delete them ... Then renamed the old ones back to actual and all was right!  (Those were the days but.. it still works!).

1. the system doesn´t want to know my Huawei E173 as an USB modem. It knows it only like an usb dongle.
2. the touchpad doesn´t work.

thank you as. the solution no.2 helped to get work my touchpad correctly.

there is only one problem: my huawei E173 doesn't work yet. I tried it through usb_modeswitch, nothing. than i installed the MobilePartner driver. if i have it in my netbook, i can get to the internet. but i can not use the FN key, i can not use the network center and my system is unstable. if i uninstall it, my netbook knows my huawei only as an usb storage.

"my netbook knows my huawei only as an usb storage."

I guess you mean you see only that partition on the USB dungle?  That is quite normal. I got also a Huawei (0153) and I see the same.
The modem part is a other animal and since yours work (you get on line) it sure is "seen". (O wait, not sure you can go on line using it right now).
Maybe you can try to open a konsole and type: lsusb.  That will likely shows your modem.
Then it should also be seen during setting up a new connection via PCC (3G etc.). Mind you the connection is NOT a wifi connection. It is a 3G and so on connection as you find during setup as a option.

o.k. to clear it everyone, here is a short story:
at the beginning i had installed a pclinuxos2010 to my netbook and i bought the Huawei E173 usb-modem to use my sim-card from my telephone operator to browse internet and so on. One day i also bought the TP-Link WN722N usb-wifi to use where can, to save some money. and there started the problem. i couldn't use it with plos2010 so i installed plos2011 to my netbook, actualised through synaptic, made my touchpad work, installed libre office and than i localised my native language. and here was the point, when my wifi worked, but my usb-modem didn't. I tried everything but nothing worked.

so when i saw, that my system's gonna crazy from it i formated my HDD and installed the pclinuxos2011 again. this time i located it for the first, than solved the problem with my touchpad and than installed libre office. You can see, i didn't do any actualisation. and everything works like charm!

so this problem is SOLVED and how? don't do the full actualisation through synaptic. actualise only things you really need. :)

now i'm happy like a dog and guys: thank you for help!

By actualise do you mean update? That is not a good idea. PCLinuxOS is a rolling release distro. Full upgrades always should be done. Partial upgrades will break your upgrade path and cause breakage to your system.

Yep, whatever WAS wrong I don't know but it is a bit hard to believe that NOW a update would put your Huawei modem out of service....
