That can be renamed before creating a new VM, simply by right clicking the .vdi file and selecting Rename.

That's why I brought it up. Wondering if your way might be better in the long run. That is, renaming ~/VirtualBoxVMs/Wind Rider folder, as well as ~/VirtualBoxVMs/Wind Rider/Wind Rider.vdi, then creating a new VM with a proper name. Guess it's the original poster's choice.

I understand that the recommended steps would be 1) rename .vdi 2) make a new virtual box with a proper name. Is that correct? That would require a new install of Win7 too, right? After this process is complete then run the "guest" commands as previously attempted? Also, after all of this is finished would I then see the drives under the machine drop down menu? That is one thing that is puzzling me the most. The drop down menu has been referred to since early in this thread yet I have never had it. Sorry for the multiple questions but I've always said, share what you know and learn what you don't. Thanks to you all for the suggestions and I look forward to the answers on these final questions.

No, there's no need whatsoever to reinstall Windows7. All you'll be doing is "cleaning up" the name spaces in your old VM name. Right now, you have a directory tree that looks like this:

/home/(yourusername)
/home/(yourusername)/VirtualBox VMs
/home/(yourusername)/VirtualBox VMs/Wind Rider
/home/(yourusername)/VirtualBox VMs/Wind Rider/Wind Rider.vdi

The directory and file indicated in bold are the only things you need to rename.

1.  Open VirtualBox.
2.  Right-click on the Wind Rider virtual machine and select Remove from the popup menu.
3.  Select Remove only. (Do not select Delete all files.)

4.  Close VirtualBox.
5.  In a file browser, open folder /home/(yourusername)/VirtualBox VMs.
6.  Right-click the Wind Rider folder and select rename.
7.  Rename the folder to Wind_Rider.
8.  Open the Wind_Rider folder.
9.  Rename Wind Rider.vdi to Wind_Rider.vdi and delete the other files and folders. They will be recreated when you recreate the VM.
10. Close your file browser.
11. Open VirtualBox.
12. Create a new virtual machine named Wind_Rider.
13. When you come to the Virtual Hard Disk window, choose Use existing hard disk.

14. Select the existing Wind_Rider.vdi.
15. Finish creating the VM, just as you did before.
16. When you boot the Wind_Rider VM, Windows will be in the state you last left it in.
