How do I install Win 7 on virtualbox? (SOLVED)
« on: January 12, 2012, 03:35:37 PM »
I have looked and searched this forum for installation help using Vbox and Windows 7 yet didn't find a solution. After installing virtualbox I inserted the Win 7 dvd into the drive but can't find a way to install it. Google search didn't help either. For something that is supposed to be easy I'm finding it difficult, frustrating and time consuming. Under settings I set the boot order to CD/DVD then hard drive, closed Vbox and started it again. Also I uninstalled virtualbox then re-installed it, deleted the virtual machines I had created and started over with no success. Am I missing something or is it supposed to be this way? Thanks to anyone who can help me resolve this matter.

When you boot VBox with the Windows CD in the tray, it should boot the install procedure if you've configured your VBox correctly, i.e. made it recognize the CD tray. Do you get that far?

Perhaps I missed something in the process but I installed VBox as instructed. This process was repeated X4 and not once did I see any option to mount a cd/dvd drive or any other drive for that matter. I went through this process step by step and cannot see how I missed something but I'll admit anything is possible. I'll do it once again just to be sure though. The windows dvd is in the drive and has been each and every time I've started VBox. I'll post back in a few. Thanks.

Well.....I'm not sure what I did "right" this time but I deleted the previous machine that I had created and did it again. Then I closed VBox and restarted it. After a short delay the install process began. Once it's finished I'll post the results. Thanks.

Just to be clear, there's a difference between "install VBox" and "configure VBox" . More specifically regarding the setup of the CD:

Glad you got it cooking, at any rate! :)

I got a message that I had a 24bit display and that I should set it to 32bit. How? I went to settings but didn't see any option to change the display. Any thoughts? It is working however. Thanks.

One last question. How do you view Windows full screen without stretching the original display? Thanks.

At the top of the window, there is Machine>View>Device. Try View. You can also use RightCtrl+F to toggle the view back and forth.

I have Machine>New>Add>Settings therefore I don't see a "view" option unless it's hidden or I simply can't find it. Is there a way to attach a screen capture so that I can show you my menu? While I doubt that this will work I'll try to attach an image to this post. TIA

Start the Windows VM. Then you'll see the View option.

VBox sets the guest display to 24 bits but Windows wants to set it at 32. You can change the display settings in Windows, but they're probably already 24 bits. Both settings are 16 million colors. The 32 bits just adds a transparency layer. You won't notice any difference.

Thank you both for the answers. Is it possible to access my PCLOS partition/data through VBox? Since I'm working with photos which are on my home partition I need to access them while using Photoshop Elements. So far I've not found a way to do this.

TIA

Please go easy on me as I simply cannot comprehend the instructions there in regards to setting this up. Here is the path on my system where VBox is located. /home/shutterbug/VirtualBox VMs
I am completely lost after several attempts

shutterbug@localhost ~]$ VBoxManage guestcontrol Wind Rider execute
VBoxManage: error: Could not find a registered machine named 'Wind'
VBoxManage: error: Details: code VBOX_E_OBJECT_NOT_FOUND (0x80bb0001), component VirtualBox, interface IVirtualBox, callee nsISupports
Context: "FindMachine(Bstr(pszNameOrId).raw(), machine.asOutParam())" at line 422 of file VBoxManageGuestCtrl.c

Thanks.
