[SOLVED] Won't Boot to KDE
« on: January 10, 2012, 11:56:33 AM »
PCLinuxOS KDE 2011 Desktop.

Fresh install yesterday. Everything went great. Updated, rebooted, all OK.

This morning I boot up I don't get the logon screen.

I end up at a dos looking screen saying something like localhost then wanting a username. I entered my root & username but end up the dos like screen remains wanting more input. Safemode is the same.

I'm new to linux & don't have a clue.

Yesterday everything was working normally.

Did you install anything without doing a full upgrade (reload, mark all updates, apply, apply)?

What happens if you login at that screen (which btw is called 'terminal' or 'command line interface')and type 'startx'?
All that is is good. PCLinuxOS is.

Tried startx, enter, then it wants a password. I can't type anything. Hit enter & I'm back with wrong password & the login terminal.

Do you have an nvidia graphic card by any chance?  If so, read through these two related posts which involves the same problem, and the fix too! If you are very new to Linux, and don't understand what to do, just ask here again.  :)

Thread one:

Thread two:
http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,101322.0.html

Hope this helps. PCLinux is normally a superbly secure and reliable OS but there was something buggy about recent nvidia driver updates....

You need to logon first with your username and password. When you type startx, the computer thinks that is the name of a user and asks for the password. log on first with username and password, and then try startx. Also, do read the threads I posted above.

when entering the password you won't see anything. Just type the password and press enter.

Bit of progress.

Using startx I got - a list if errors.  ;D

Failed to load module 'glx'

Failed to load module 'dri'

Failed to load module /usre/lib/xorg/modules/linux/libfglrxdrm.so

Then a few more.

And at the bottom of the screen -

Fatal server error
no screens found

Yesterday when I installed I had the monitor hooked up & the tv was connected with hdmi. This morning when I booted the tv was disconnected from the power. If that means anything. The power is on now but still nothing.

How about this:

After entering your username and password, type this command: XFdrake --auto <enter>
And then type startx <enter>

That got it plankton172.  :)

Rebooted & got straight in. Any idea what happened?

Big thanks to everyone else too.

Haven't got time to look around at the system now. Time to go grocery shopping.   :'(

I'm glad it worked for you, Proletariat. :)

Most likely, your system could not determine the correct driver for your video card and that's why it could not start X (i.e., the X Window System). My desktop was in a similar situation very recently and I'm starting to suspect the my video needs to be replaced.

Hope you have fun with Linux... more fun than grocery shopping, I suppose.  :D
