Getting a Cisco AM10 Valet Connector wireless stick to work

Hey everyone, it's mr_bigmouth_502 here, and this is my first post on this forum!

Anyhow, I just installed PCLinuxOS LXDE 2011 on my desktop yesterday, and it works great other than the fact that I can't seem to get my wireless adapter working. Now I understand that you can use a program called ndiswrapper to load Windows networking drivers, and that my particular wireless adapter is kind of tricky to set up due to the fact that it actually has an internal usb hub with a flash drive and the wireless adapter all in one package, but I don't know exactly what I'm supposed to do to get this all working.

I also found some information on this forum http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1808690 (not promoting it or anything, I just came across it in my search) about a program called usb_modeswitch, and how it can help, but it goes way over my head. (I'm a n00b with Linux, which is kind of odd considering that I'm basically a power user on Windows! XD)

the utility usb_modeswitch is available in our repos, simply start Synaptic (package manager), click on Reload, Mark all updates, Search [usb_modeswitch], select the two packages, click Apply and Apply.

then try to follow the link you posted, remember that PCLinuxOS doesn't use sudo, instead before to use commands that would require sudo, simply type su (or "su -", depending on current setup of LXDE), followed by your root password, then type the required commands.

Is there any way I could download the packages from Windows? I can't hook my computer directly into the router to access it in Linux because it's too far away and I don't have a long enough cable.

.. there could be, the fact is that once you installed PCLinuxOS you need to do all updates in sync, you can't just install usb_modeswitch, PCLinuxOS is a rolling distro, meaning that you need to update frequently and consistently. Also, very probably you will need to install a reasonably large number of updates, depending on the release you installed. Either, provide a new cable or move temporarily the computer near the router/switch.
