LXDE won't boot (Solved, maybe)
« on: January 06, 2012, 01:22:56 PM »
This happened on the other drive, now happening on this drive.

It gets to alps, and stops before it hits init run level 5 (think that's what it says then).

Anybody have any ideas?

EDIT:
I can boot the XP partition.

Thanks all!

jan

EDIT:

Whilst entering the date in CMOS yesterday I gave the wrong day/date and Linux would not boot. I kept getting a certificate error message in my email program and just could not figure out why. Then looked at the day/date and changed it, afterward Linux booted.. So even tho I sorta re-created this by accident, I'm gonna call it solved..

Thanks all,

jan

any boot messages?

It just stops, no hard drive activity, it pumps the drive like 3 times once it gets to the alps driver and just stops...

I think I figured this out, at 3:00 A.M.

Is linux date sensitive? In other words if your cmos clock changes date, will linux ignore it and boot or not?

Because it's working now, and I noticed after I got home the date was off (email I sent to someone had the wrong date), since the cmos battery and the other battery on this lappy is dead, I have to set CMOS everytime I boot...

But on this lappy it's not worth replaceing the battery. It's an old celeron 600 with 128 meg of memory. The power supply wire between the brick and the lappy broke, so I threw it in the laptop bag and started using the computers at the branch library I used to go to. When they closed I strpped the wires back and twisted them together and started using it again, but the 8+ months in the bag ate the rest of the CMOS battery. It (laptop) needs to be replaced, and friends/cousins keep telling me oh, I have one for you, but they seem to never show up here... :(

Somebody did send me a Dell, but the power supply was toast and I can't afford to buy a new one...

Thinking a cmos battery isn't to tired, and how to replace it, can you find in www.

Or you don't shutdown your lappy, try suspend when it work for you   :)

Both CMOS and lappy batteries are dead, if one was alive I'd be able to start and boot without having to go into bios and re-setting time and date...

Anyway, I've tried to get this thing apart and It's not working, very old laptop and I'm almost afraid to take it apart as it's the only computer I have...

Not solved, sorry I've been MIA... I've tried to recreate by using wrong date and I'm guessing that no matter it will load.

So back to square one, and still trying to figure it out.. Hoping hard drive is not bad as this is the last one I have..
