This is not my strong area but could this be a codec issue?
Only thing that I can suggest is try seeing if you have win3-codecs and win32-codecs-all installed.
As far as I know, it doesn't 'cost' anything to install them, i.e. no dependencies.

Also, might be worth trying to install VLC, just to check. The player 'eats' just about anything, everywhere.

But this, of course, won't do much if it is mainly in the browser that you have issues. And you have already checked your graphics driver and flash.

Better shut up and let someone who knows what they are doing take over.

I just tried to follow the above recommendation.  I checked, and neither of the Win32 codec packages was installed.  I tried both of them (only one can be installed at a time) and I still cannot play many youtube videos, although some play, as before.  I get a message for some of the non-playing videos saying that I have to upgrade to Flash 10, but when I look for Flash in Synaptic, it is loaded (I already reloaded it at the start of this problem), and besides, the version of Flash I see in Synaptic is 11.1.102.55-pclos2011. 

I backed up a bit in the PCLinuxOS version that I loaded, so at the moment I am running 2.6.38.8-pclos3.bfs.  I usually run the A64 kernel.  I have not upgraded the kernel to the most current one since I did not want to make another change before resolving this problem.  Could it be that I need the latest kernel now?

Totally out of my debt here, but... just have a quick look in firefox itself, type URL 'about:plugins' to see if it reports using the same version of flash.
(For what it's worth, I just checked mine and both places, it reports the same version as yours.)

Only thing I - myself - would know: re-install the flash-plugin via Synaptic; but as you have already done that, I really don't know... sorry, I wish I could be of more help...

You've tried reinstalling flash-player-plugin?

What about kde4-config-flash - have you tried reinstalling that as well? (Although I don't think that should really have an impact in this situation)

If you go to Configure Your Desktop >> Hardware >> Multimedia > Adobe Flash Player is there any anything set preventing playback

Lastly have you tried (re)installing xulrunner (although I believe it's not as essential as it once was.)

OK.  After reinstalling the flash plug-in several days ago, I decided to follow menotu's recommendations step-by-step.  Sure enough, the first step, reinstalling the flash plug-in, seems to have restored my videos.  I then did an about:plugins and there is the Flash entry, second in the list, right after Adobe Reader.

Thank you to all who helped.  I only wish I had an understanding of what went wrong in the first place, and why my first reinstallation did not work.

At any rate, I will mark this topic Solved.
