Got my Transformer Prime! It's Awesome!
« on: January 04, 2012, 08:59:31 PM »
Well, I finally got my Asus Transformer Prime today.  It booted right up.  android is Awesome!

wow!  This thing is fast!  I've been playing with it all night while it charged.  Now, it's fully charged and I'm turning in.

before I retire, I iired one more thing.  I plugged it into my PCLinuxOS system to move some files, etc.

No go.  It's looking for an Asus sync program on the PC (a Windows thing?).  My brother's HTC tablet was found on my PCLinuxOS system with no problems.  This isn't coming up at all.

I issued fdisk -l and lots of info came up but I'm not sure which drives are which.

Toonfully,

Nice tablet, I want one!

A quick peek on the Asus website shows this regarding Asus Sync:
Quote
To sync your contact list and calendar between Eee PAD and PC.

I suspect the fast and dirty way to transfer any kind of files is via Dropbox, not ideal but it should work fine. Other than that... hey, it's a brand new device so it may take a while to get things working with PClos, if it can be done.

My Android phone gives me "Options" when I connect it.  i.e (Charge Only, Sync, Disk Drive, ect..).

If I select (Charge Only) it doesn't mount and I never see it as a mounted device.

If however I select (Disk Drive) it automagically mounts and I can see it in my file manager.

Look for some setting in Android that dictates how the device acts when connected.

Just a guess.  ;)

On the android tablet that we have in the house (running Gingerbread), we go to Settings -> Applications -> Development -> USB DEBUGGING = Enabled.

Once the above is set, a "TURN ON/OFF USB STORAGE" should be visible and this is where you can make the tablet a USB slave.

If all else fails, I think a micro SD card is your answer.

Hope this helps! :)

Transformer is actually an MTP device, so you need to install from Synaptic mtpfs

Open Terminal, go su, copy & paste the following:

1.
Code: [Select]
mkdir /media/transformer
2.
Code: [Select]
chmod 775 /media/transformer
3.
Code: [Select]
mtpfs -o allow_other /media/transformer
Type exit.

Still in Terminal:

Code: [Select]
cd /media/transformer

than ls and you should see something like this:

Quote
Alarms/
Android/
asus/
BeyondPod/

burstlyImageCache/
burstlyVideoCache/

kindle/
layar/
LOST.DIR/
Meecal/

--snip--

Now open your file manager and go to /media/transformer:

You can drag & drop... ;)

To remove device-open Terminal, go su, copy & paste:

Code: [Select]
umount mtpfs

ferry_th, thanks for this! I'm gonna give this a try on my laptop first.:)  Probably this evening.:)

As for enabling USB debugging, I did that it's still not responding.  Asus has some sort of PC Sync program running that just keeps turning and turning and never seeing my PCLinuxOS system.

The Micro SD card is the quick fix.  I bought one with an adapter, plugged it into my notebook, moved a file and ten plugged it into the Tablet.:)  It came right up.:)  I also have a Box account.:)

Now, the really neat thing is, I can buy a docking keyboard for this and it becomes a netbook device!:)  I believe the keyboard dock has a USB input.  It also extends the battery life.  I am planning on buying the keyboard.  So, Ill play around with the solutions offered here.

I also learned that the tablet is getting an upgrade to Andriod Ice Cream Sandwich. Now that I know this, I may wait and see if it brings extra functionality for Linux access.:)

tThanks, again, folks!

BTW, this tablet is AWESOME!  Definitely the one to get, IMHO.  The quad core processor makes this thing scream!

Still, one of the best out there.

I would buy the Asus before buying the iPad.  But, there is nothing out there right now that I would be really happy with.

Read over the article.

Well, I have one, I'm running it, and aside from the first one being DOA which can happen to any device, I gotta say that this thing is amazing! No lag, no hesitation...it screams at lightning speed!  Android is fantastic!   Super, super smooth scrolling. Crisp graphics.  Higher rez than the iPad. 8 Megapixel camera.  Amazing sound quality!  On first startup/welcome, it found all my Google apps and account and gave me instant access to all of it.

Could it be that the author is an Apple fan and merely spreading FUD?  I dunno. But, I agree, I'm glad I have this over an iPad.

That's the attitude!  If it does what you want it to do and does it satisfactorily, then enjoy and forget what other people say/write. No device is perfect and you can't please everyone, so use it and enjoy it.

Would have been nice if they hadn't locked it down, though.

This is new ground for Asus.

...forum members collectively erupted in rage yesterday after it was discoverd Asus locked down the Prime’s bootloader.

Update: Asus just announced via its Facebook page that a boot unlocker is in the works and Android 4.0 will hit the device starting on January 12. Asus claims that they had to lock the device in order to meet certain DRM requirements and if owners choose to unlock the tablet, it will void the warranty and remove the ability to rent videos from Google.

So... I still want one and envy Mr. Georgetoon tremendously!  :D :D

Believe me, I was chomping at the bit for a week and a half!  That first unit was damaged in shipping, no doubt about it.  I think my nephews were more disappointed than me when it didn't work.

But, having it now, and so much closer now to the Ice cream Sandwich update, makes up for the wait.:)

I'm having a blast with it!

The only video camera I have is on my cell phone. I want to blog about it and show folks what it can do.  Not sure if I can hold the cell phone, and demo the tablet.

Maybe you can rig up a makeshift tripod for your phone to steady it and free your hands. I'll be watching for it, whatever you do!
