[SOLVED]Touchpad tweaks
« on: January 04, 2012, 05:50:28 PM »
2011.6 KDE fully updated on Compaq Presario CQ50 using Texstar's touchpad solution #2 seems OK but maybe it's me that notices occasional cursor issues.

Issue 1. "cursor freezes" using touchpad. They are not technically freezes b/c I can see the cursor trying to move and if somone else comes along and uses their finger or if I wet my fingertip the cursor will then respond, but sometimes no matter  what we do, cursor is hung in one location until mars-jupiter alignment releases it and continue on our merry way.

I have tried the stock 50-synaptics.conf and touchpad cursor works but no tapping hence Texstar's #2 fix. I have tried both with a stock /etc/X11/xorg.conf and with NO xorg.conf

Issue 2. Not really familiar with all the ins-outs of touchpads but I believe main touchpad area is for moving cursor and the little 1/4" strip on the right is for scrolling. Is this correct? ( I am mainly a desktop user). I believe there is such a thing as two finger scrolling and I guess it means if you "walk" your fingertips in the pad area it will act as though you are scrolling. Problem is, sometimes using ONE finger in  the main touchpad area gives me scrolling and I can't do anything, especially when filling out online forms or logins.

Issue 3.  Making every effort to be "clean" and not brushing touchpad, but many times when filling out online forms, last text cut and pasted  (regardless of when or what app last used) will be inserted into a text field in the middle of typing. It is very annoying. Don't know if this is a klipper problem but I am going to disable Klipper.

No problems using a USB mouse.

Any tweaks  greatly appreciated?

In "Configure your Desktop"  > "Touchpad"  there are some behavior adjustments available.  You can also select to auto disable touchpad while keyboard is in use.  Hope this helps.

Hmm nothing there under Configure your Desktop under HDWR>input devices. Only options for mouse. no touchpad

Checked PCC and there is "configure mouse/touchpad" in hdwr with "universal/any ps/2 and USB mice" selected. Other option is "force evdev". Maybe i am blind?

Also there are some options in the 50-synaptics.conf file that I can't find in man pages. I think one of the scrolling functions is causing the problem as when I am in the general touchpad area with one finger I am getting scrolling instead of cursor movement. Problem is it comes and goes.  The scrolling area (right hand vertical strip) of touchpad works fine.

Looks like commenting out these lines in 50-synaptics.conf (Texstar post version #2) has stopped the single finger scrolling. I suppose I could also set the value to "0".

#Option  "VertTwoFingerScroll"   "1"
#Option  "HorizTwoFingerScroll"  "1"

Still have issues with random pasting text while typing ( this probably has to do with tapping functions but haven't found it yet and have tried touchfreeze and others but they don't work well),  but the scrolling really was annoying and has stopped so will mark this as solved.

You may need to install the package "synaptiks" from Package Manager.  It is a touchpad service for KDE4.  Logout/Login and recheck for option in Configure My Desktop.

Nicest thing about "synaptiks" is that it will automatically turn the touchpad OFF when you plug in a USB mouse.  And vice-versa...

Of course, some of the others may do that, too, I haven't investigated.

synaptiks DID install to KDE control center but to "lost and found" category. Is this normal?

Thanks

KDE doesn't know what category to place it in.  As long as you can access and use the tool.

Going to tinker with synaptiks a while and see if it writes to the 50-synaptics.conf file. I think I have tamed the touchpad to a major extent using this file and will decide whether or not to keep synaptiks.

This Compaq CQ50 tp has apparently given all OS's problems with being overly  sensitive.

Thanks

Update: touchpad under pclos 2010 on a second identical cq50 seems to behave quite well but there is no 50-synaptics.conf file to compare with.

Is xorg.conf handling touchpad in 2010 as opposed to 2011?

Any insight appreciated.
