Ok so the hard disc was actually on the verge of dying - prompted me to change/upgrade the whole system.

Now I am running with Sandy bridge setup, will PCLOS work on it?
I have read a lot about problems being faced by Ubuntu/Mint users

The graphics support will be the sore point. See here. The newer 3.x kernels solve some Sandy bridge problems. But, as you can see from the Intel blog, getting the graphics working correctly is the tricky part.

The best way to find out how well PCLinuxOS will run on your PC is to try a live CD. That will give you some idea.
