Hi everybody. Everyone here has been so helpful. I never got this kind of swift responses on the Mandriva forums. They are full of slow, very rude and arrogant people who think they know everything, when they are not half as smart as they think they are. All it seems like all they want to do is make you feel like an idiot. But not here. You guys are great. Before I get in trouble with the admins, I did a search on compiling and installing. I'm not new to Linux, just some things I never learned. Either I'm doing something wrong, but it looks like I'm the only retard here that does not know how to compile and install. :-[ Well, I'm not asking, but if anyone can steer me in the right direction, say like a web page or something, without spending any money, I'd be grateful ;D P.S. I love PCLinixOS!  IT ROCKS! :)

Before I get in trouble with the admins, I did a search on compiling and installing. I'm not new to Linux, just some things I never learned. You won't get in trouble with the admins for asking a question that's been asked before. If an admin answers your post, (s)he may tell you it's been asked before and point you to the Search box or provide a link where the question was answered in the forum. It's just that the responders here may get a little weary of answering the same questions repeatedly. That's all. You certainly want to get answers.

In that regard, a forum search and an internet search will go a long way towards that quest for an answer. But, you may not find one after searching the forum and the internet. Or, you may not understand the answers you get. In that case, fire away. Just explain what you've done to look for an answer, or what you don't understand about what you found. Please read this for a more complete explanation.

In regards to compiling, see this for the shortest and simplest answer as to how to proceed. You might also do an internet search for "Linux compile from source". In addition, you could post your question in the Advanced Users Section of this forum. If you provide specific information, such as what you are trying to compile, the URL from where you got it, what you've tried and what errors you're getting, it is highly probable you will get some answers and learn something in the process.

Thanx guys. You are all very understanding. It makes me feel a lot better. Well, all I want to do is install a few little programs I saw on the net. Nothing big time. So I will take your suggestions and play around with it. I've also "Googled" compiling, so far I'm still in the dark, but where there is a Steve (that's me) there's a way! ;D

24. Software Additions Requests for software additions to the Official PCLinuxOS repositories can be made to the Package Suggest forum.
Please be sure to read the rules for posting to this forum first.

Usage of our Package Suggest section is recommended. The advantages in having an official package available are that you will not convert your system to a non-standard (unsupported/unsupportable) install (perhaps borked it completely right away), you will know that the package has been set up to bring in its dependencies and tested to work with PCLinuxOS, and you will have the ability to easily uninstall the program, if it isn't all you thought/wanted.
If you just want to learn about compiling and installing, a separate 'test/build' partition or a virtual machine is the best option for such. I've been using separate 'test/build' partitions for years and highly recommend it.

Thanx Neal. Can I say that has to be the COOLEST pic I've ever seen on a forum. Can you teach me how to do that? I'm a Lycan! ;)
I din't mean to down the "other" distro, well, I did, but I'll keep it cool from now on ;)

Yeah, that's the attitude to take ... even for a Lycan like yourself. ;) We do not discuss other distros here - promoting such or flaming their forums. We do not want their mods coming here complaining about a post putting down their distro or such and saying we're not doing anything about it. We do not want a distro war, and we are not afraid of them either. We just know better that such things as bashing each other is pointless and will not get anywhere good.

As for compiling, there are usually instructions on the packages that you'd download on how to configure, compile and install the app. Check the README or INSTALL. But due warning: anything installed outside the repository is not officially supported. Do such things at your own risk.

Or if you think the app you want to install might be interesting and useful to other PCLinuxOS users, you can always make a Package Suggest ... ahh, I know that section was closed for the holiday and I don't have the link at hand so ... wait. ;)

Please forgive if this does not apply but I had other problems
Ref

When I done the following after advice from nixer
Quote
I had the same exact problem.  I got a segmentation fault after logging in.  I read a post about a problem with nvidia drivers with the "prelink" program in synaptic.  I was using nvidia drivers.
End Quote
I uninstalled prelink from synaptic and the problem went away immediately.  Prelink is supposed to speed up the programs starting, but I can not notice any difference.
the problem I also had with Flash corrected itself.
It may be a problem common with the "prelink" program
Please note it takes a long time for "prelink" to uninstall just leave Synaptic to do its stuff 10 mins or more.
I hope this is usefull

I've had no problems with prelink and nvidia drivers here, so the issue may not be universal.

I've had no problems with prelink and nvidia drivers here, so the issue may not be universal.

I also have prelink preinstalled on PCLinuxOS 64 Test4 on my Sony VAIO using NVIDIA. No problem and all is speedy and stable.

It could be just specific chipsets or even on mobos.

So if your issues are not present if you remove prelink, then don't use it.

I have no doubt that removing prelink can make that particular problem "go away" but prelink has been present in PCLinuxOS for ages and hasn't changed in 9 months.  The same cannot be said for the Nvidia driver.

Removing prelink will change where shared libraries (like the Nvidia driver) are loaded in memory and what code surrounds them.  So my worry is that by removing prelink you are just trading a consistent reproducible problem for something more random and unpredictable.

(Just my opinion)

Terry.

Well, I don't know what help I'll be, but I thought I'd try after all the help I got. I don't know yet what prelink is, but I do use a Nvidia FX5200. PCLinuxOS picked up the drivers right away. I only have a 2 GHZ processor with 1.7 G Ram, and my system leaves "tread tracks to the front door"
I do know that if you stay on this link you will get a lot of help. They sure helped me. :)

I don't know yet what prelink is, but I do use a Nvidia FX5200.

Althought it is a bit technical, this short article explains what prelinking is and how it works.
