A previous thread (last June) said to add "special" to the Filters>Section list in Synaptic in order to add a program that otherwise does
not show up in the list of available files in Synaptic.  When I snap on "Add" and write "special" in the box at the top, it does not add to the list in the right-hand window, and even tho the word "special" remains at the bottom of the left-jhand window, it has not been
applied. Please help.

Where are you adding 'special?' It sounds like you are adding it in the wrong place, with your talk of top left and right. You do not add it to the top. You add it to Section(s):
