Problems installing on Lenovo G770

I have been happily using PCLinuxOS on netbooks, but I just bought the Lenovo G770 laptop, and cannot get a successful installation.

If I use the Phinx cd which has successfully installed on 2 netbooks, then the process stops just before the screen asking about partitions appears.  The screen goes black, the cursor is nowhere to be seen and all cd activity ceases.

Phoenix livecd works, wifi, everything functions, big screen looks great.  Then I install to hard disk and things go wrong.
When I boot up, everything seems fine, log in, and then the video display is all wrong.  Less than half the screen is used horizontally and the colors are messed up, leaving the desktop virtually unreadable, unusable.  I finally, by hit and miss, got to display settings where it says that 1600 by 900 setting is already in place.  However, that is not true.

What can I do?  I am desperate.

By the way, I tried an old livecd of another distro.  It worked and displays at proper resolution, so it does not seem to be the computer's fault.  Any suggestions?

Using PCC --> Hardware --> Configure Video Card, in this order, first select the proper monitor, then the correct video card driver, then the proper resolution and color depth. Save the results when asked, then reboot.

Phinx is not a PCLinuxOS product but powered by PCLinuxOS. I don't know what video drivers Sproggy decided to include on his CD. Maybe best to check his forum.

Sorry, it was the phoenix edition that I was able to install in the end.

If this computer comes with the AMD Radeon HD 6650M video you may need updated AMD fglrx driver that provides support for that video card from the repo. Maybe the driver on the CD is too old.

If you can get to a terminal screen in root mode on the install you can run apt-get update and then apt-get dist-upgrade.

I got things running from the distorted half screen, but only at a resolution of 1024 x 768

If I try to make adjustments through the configuration setup and reboot I get error messages and end up having to reinstall.

It seems a pity to have a 17 inch laptop and not be able to use its full resolution.

do you know the right highest resolution tolerated by this screen?

if you log out of the desktop and run XFdrake you should be able to force the resolution you want or edit the xorg.conf to add the right resolution

Highest resolution is 1600 x 900.

How do I access Xfdrake if I log out of desktop?

2.6.38.8-pclos3.bfs is the kernel

perfect, that is the latest available, so the problem seems to be limited to set the right resolution by hand and all problems should be solved

So, to configure the video card I would select "radeonhd" under xorg?  I could not see anything else similar in the "vendor list."
