Grub needs some work, as it can't properly see the Windows partition. Booting takes a long time, because it's searching for the old hardware in every boot. And who knows what else may came up, not to mention it needs a little extra customisation anyway since this is a laptop.

Yeah, GRUB and fstab relying on UUIDs for info can cause problems when moving the config to another machine. Can you post the output of the following?

su -
df -T
cat /etc/fstab
cat /boot/grub/menu.lst
exit

Bare metal                           VBox
AMD Athlon 7750 Dual-Core    Single core
4GiB RAM                              1GiB RAM
nVidia GeForce FX 5200          64MB video
LXDE 32bit                            KDE 64bit

I also tried installing the remaster via the command line mode, but draklive-install returns an error:
Can't locate object method "new" via package "ugtk2" at /usr/sbin/draklive-install line 107
That means you installation was/is already corrupted.

Out of curiosity I checked, and that's also the case with a PCLinuxOS 2012.2 live cd.

No, if it was the case the same issue should have been replicated by each user of 2012.02, which is not the case.

Thanks for the interest, but I've lost my patience with cloning. I'm going for a fresh install, it will be very time consuming to set it up the way I need it, but at least I know it's going to work. Plus, the latest iso adds some very useful tools.

About corrupted installation... I have successfully installed my remasters on other computers and I never had the slightest issue with this installation, so I'd be surprised... And I do get exactly the same error with the latest iso when trying to run draklive-install in safe mode (but it does work fine in gui mode). I've checked the md5sum and ran the media check, so it can't be corrupted. I am a little puzzled... maybe the problem lies in the particular laptop somehow? It's not very Linux friendly after all, video and audio need to be set manually in order to work.

Anyway, thank you all for your replies :)

That's clarify the issue, I've not tried the installation in safe-mode.  ;)
About the laptop, I saw at least a couple of thread of issues related to Acer Aspire 5xxx ... yes, could be a problematic laptop ...
