I am not surprised that the line: direct parallel:/dev/lp0
is missing, this is what is giving me the headache, especially since your late reply showed

Quote
$ /usr/lib/cups/backend/parallel
direct parallel:/dev/lp0 "Canon LBP-660" "Canon LBP-660 LPT #1" "MFG:Canon;MDL:LBP-660  ;CMD:RASTER;CLS:PRINTER;REV:11;VER:1010" ""

I think that CUPS is not detecting your parallelport properly.

In the lpinfo -v you have a line direct hp what does that refer to? Do you have a hp scanner/fax connected?

I have had this happen to an HP printer, in the past, when there was an update to the printer package, or cups. What I have done is I go into PCC, and CUPS and delete the printer (with the printer turned off), then I turn the printer on and reinstall it from either PCC or cups.

Didn't have to do with the HP Printer, just that I had the same problem and fixed it by doing what I stated. Try that and see if it works for your printer. Didn't have to do with the make, was the way I fixed it.  ;)

No hp connected, that is interesting, I do not know at this stage what the significance of this is but it is a hint that something is not right. In an earlier post you also showed hp fax backend in the lpinfo -v

Well it is my belief that the line direct parallel:/dev/lp0 must show up in the result of konsole statement lpinfo -v if the printer is connected and powered up.  If it does not show CUPS may be confused.

Ok, I can no longer ignore your particular customisation of whatever version you are running. We have to have you running a system that is standard, that I can repeat here.

I am going to change approach but will need to look at one of my base installs first.

Right now I would like to know if you are running your present system based on a KDE liveCD version 2012.02 or is it based on earlier ISO kept fully updated?  Not clear to me.

Did you run a parallel printer connection? I have no supporting facts myself but there may be something in your statement that an upgrade could have changed something slightly. I have assumed what you are suggesting has in fact been tried a number of times from the way zyberhawk has posted, this assumption could be biting me in the back.  :)

No mine was a USB at the time. I didn't see where he said, that he did that, so I just figured I would throw that out as sometimes we forget to try the obvious, OR we assume they did the obvious.   ;)

Post the output from konsole:

Quote
ls -l /var/spool/cups/

There is something that I am missing and I have little idea what it is.

Will you be able to install liveCD on a single 10G partition,  ie no /home partition or swap partition. No updates no customisation.  Having this on a partition rather than the liveCD allows for installing some simple programs and no loose them when shutting down.  Really a bit like liveCD with persistence.  Then when no longer needed the partition can just be deleted or overwritten.

Setting up a test system I am hoping to be able to control what you do as far as printer installs.   :)

That sounds very good, I have suddenly got very busy with some house maintenance that I have promised to help with next door. Time is starting to be short in supply for me.   :)

What you showed in the last post just ells me your printer que is empty. Those c files are control files which self deletes after a certain number is reached, I think. Each job gets a temp print file allocated and a c file, ie c000020 would have been associated with a d000020  :)
