Kde4 Minime with Openbox : Christmas Edition 2011
« on: December 21, 2011, 07:20:35 PM »
Someone said it was not possible to get snow on the screen in Kde. I tried and found it didn't work. Then I decided to install Openbox to see if it was feasable. Then next step, then step after step, it ended being a new version... :D

I tried it only in Virtualbox, it boots as Live untill the end, the desktop works fine (I didn't try the 3 types of session in Virtualbox, because this laptop is a bit low in resources). In fact the version for now is one in French, and after I finished testing in Live vbox I used addlocale to revert to English. The remaster process is running to make a version in English.

here is a first screenshot

My, where is KDE ?! :D

It's under the box ! XD

KDE4, Openbox, Feh, Idesk, Tint2, all the base from KDE Minime, plus file-roller, plus unzip... plus Gqview... 3 type of sessions are available. Sorry for the Ksplash, 11 sizes is a bit too much for what I can provide now... and there are several parts in the system where I don't know if files can be safely erased, so in doubt I left them.

Highlighted programs : all KDE games are installed. :D

I hope you will be many to try it and have fun with it during the Holidays !

Happy Holidays to all !

PS: The download is open !

There are a few little bugs left, but I think it is useable, and easy to fix.

Known bug : I forgot to add again "idesk &" in ~/.config/openbox/autostart.sh (switched from French to English version);
The plymouth image is too big and heavy. So in Virtualbox the keyboard was not working, unless I boot to the second line "Live CD No Boot Splash". Here is a lighter image for a next version, or for fixing it for you: http://i.minus.com/jb2df7Zm1syBCY.png

It goes to /usr/share/plymouth/themes/PCLinuxOS, has to belong to root.root, then the this command must be done as root, from within the same directory: "switch-themes PCLinuxOS --rebuild-initrd".

I would also install and use prelink this way, to enhance the speed of the display for the background, and the right-click menu:
Code: [Select]
# prelink -vmR /usr/bin/feh /usr/bin/openbox-menu
(not -a : it makes big caches which take longer to be loaded).

PS-2: if anyone finds other things which can be improved, I could make one more version for tomorrow. I just corrected all what I found and also added a few kdeedu games, among which kturtle, one for geometry, and several more which look attractive.
