[ solved ] ping IP to show url?

When doing a simple ping

What is the option to get the 'name' listed as well?  I have searched the forum but not sure how to frame the question.

In "some" OS the result is as shown above, but for z=w this will screw up presentation here in forum using www.--.

 I have on and off looked for this response in Linux without luck so far.

202.139.83.3 resolves to dns0.optus.net.au here in South Aus
(the server name is actually ns1.optus.net.au)

Name servers typically do not reply to pings with their domain names.

Also pinging an non-name server generally only gets you the servers gateway name, for example
try "ping www.themercury.com.au"  

...

or better "ping www.tasracing.com.au"
In the latter case you should get something like

PING www.tasracing.com.au (116.213.4.244) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from fogell.ldmfoundry.com (116.213.4.244): icmp_req=1 ttl=49 time=26.8 ms

and I happen to know that fogdell.ldmfoundry.com is the hosting service for TasRacing.  So the result doesn't really provide a great deal of information!

The IP I used as an example actually does not respond here, I have used this as my secondary DNS option but when I set up fixed IPś I found it did no longer work here.  When I started pinging I found that my "ping -a ..." did not work, looked up the "man ping " which has another meaning for -a option (audible ping).

Bit of head scratching here as you show the result.    Well I will find another secondary DNS.

Do you actually get a response from pinging 202.139.83.3 when I try I have to 'bail' out as the ping seems in a wait loop?

I am presently on a LXDE Live CD as I have taken down my main machine and wanted to type what I see when closing my normal KDE-mini, which seems to hang or take a long time to close down.

So my ping problem on above is at least on 2 different systems.

There is a "LOT" of stuff on whirlpool about optus gratuitously changing their dns server addresses and as far as I'm concerned that just adds one more tick against my list of reasons why I will nevereverever use them again.

By the way tracerouting or tracepathing 202.139.83.3 still goes to the optus gates, but the route from there on in is denied

So it looks like from line 14 that there is a secondary dns server in melbourne (he said, lightly assuming that "*.mel.optusnet.com.au" is actually in Melbourne and not in

Got my KDE-mini going again (just down for cable relocation, to let the vacuum cleaner under) looks better too.  .

Love the tracepath without the -n, using it on my DNS servers gives me a finger print for next time my Internet access fails. I like the name resolution as if it shows I assume that the DNS is working as well as tcp/ip,  Did not think of it might be part of the install but I have just checked LXDE LiveCD and this has it too, so it is not something I have accidentally installed.

Thanks for posting I am real happy, declaring the thread solved.

By the way hating anything is a waste of good time, which could be spent on exploring the stars instead.

Well I know of it and use it sometimes. My idea is to have a small set of very basic tools to do network investigation when my system goes funny. The tool should be 'built in' when you start a liveCD as I don't think too clearly when I get 'excited'.  I just checked my installed KDE-mini and whilst whois can be found in Synaptic it needs to be installed.

So if the internet is down no whois I will add it to my goodies file though.
