<Solved>Something went wrong kmail2.
« on: November 23, 2012, 03:27:48 AM »
Hi to all,
Something went wrong, the system locked up.
On rebooting nothing happened, grub was ok but nothing could be found.
I reinstalled 2012,08 but then I had lost 99% of my emails (kmail2).
Does anyone no how to recover these emails, some 40,000+ that are missing?
Many thanks for any info you can give me.

kmail2 is unnecessarily complicated.

Old kmail1 was stored in .kde4/share/apps/kmail/

New kmail2 is hidden in .local/share/.local-mail.directory/ (note doubly hidden)

Configure kmail > Accounts > Local Floders may also give a clue.

If you did not delete your /home directory the files should still be there. if they are important back them up with a cron script or utility

Many thanks,
Neither replies managed to get lost emails back.
I finally reinstalled 2012.08 formatting both root and home. I do have some of the emails backed up but not the latest few days.
The system seems to run better but kmail2 still is acting very strange.
I suppose I will have to live with that until  the KDE people get kmail2 working correctly.
OR go back to  2010 or 2011 and kmail1.
I do have a local repository for them.

Try Claws-mail, it looks and feels like Kmail and has a simple, intuitive directory structure in Dolphin. Claws-mail is blazing fast, not that Kmail was a total dog, but there is a noticable difference in how fast Claws-mail is. Plus if you don't need it for any other apps you can ditch akonadi, nepumuk, stingi and all the other crap KDE is foisting on simple (that's me :P ) users.

Gezza, there is nothing wrong with 2012.08 but you have problems with kmail. Please correct the title of your post.

Corrected.
Now I have only about a dozen emails left after the crash. I do have backups from the previous day.
I have re-installed 2012.08, but I cannot get previous archives back in a satisfactory way.
I cannot re-create the structure in kmail2  on the laptop where 2012.08 crashed. I have rsynced .local to a spare drive.
So I re-installed 2012.08 and reformatted both root and home then tried to recreate what was there before.
It still will not allow me to do so.
when trying to archive the sent-mail folder it returns an error about not able to read folder or doing nothing!!
I rsynced the  the data to the 64 bit system and get the same problems.
Since I have a system still running 2011.06 I am now going to move the kmail archives to that and use kmail1.
And see what I ca do there.

Does anyone know if kmail2 has a limit on folder size?
I have a folder, debian, which has 33000+ files in it, and I cannot create an archive from it.
Folders that have less than 5000 files in, archiving works.
kmail1 does not have a problem with a large number of emails in one folder.
End-edit.
