<Reinstalled> Just did update, now can't boot to desktop.

Hi all,

Just did update in synaptic, last one I ran was 8 or 9 days ago.
All seemed to be fine, however I rebooted after the update (I know, not necessary). Upon restart I am unable to get to a normal graphical login, instead I have a graphical localhost login box.  I have tried logging in as root and once I do it goes into the drak3d setting.  I choose 'no 3d desktop effects' and from that point on it advises me to log out and log back in.  Click OK and then black screen.

All my logins are available at the initial localhost login box, I have tried them all and they log in but with the same issue on each one.  I am about to reinstall the root partition but if there is an easier fix I would love to hear it.

I am currently posting from this system using a liveCD.

run    pcc   from a terminal and select   xorg-vesa    as the graphics card driver, and then try logging in again.

Ended up just reinstalling the root partition.

I forgot to check the user ID numbers of my existing logins first and so ended up having to create unique usernames and moving everything into the new profiles for the ones that didn't match up.

My wife is testing her login now....don't think I forgot anything!
