DVD Burners Not Detected

I changed /etc/systcl.conf to dev.cdrom.autoclose=0 and that resolved the problem of both drives closing automatically. After fixing that, I decided to try one more time to see if the drives would detect a blank DVD. While running as Root, both drives detect and will record a DVD. After I switched to User, neither drive detects blank DVDs. I can read the files on the DVD that I recorded as Root. I remember in older versions of Linux that fstab had lines for the optical drives. fstab on this computer does not have lines for either optical drive. Since both drives work correctly when running as Root, I think there is a problem somewhere that is making them not available to users for burning.

And I am aware of the problem of some burners not being able to use some brands of blank DVDs or CDs. I have 2 brands because I still have an older computer running Win98. I keep it for running a couple DOS programs for programming scanner radios that have never been made available for WinXP or Linux.

Do you mean: are not recognized from "Device Notifier", right ?

Forget about, doesn't apply to current PCLinuxOS.

Doesn't seems to be your issue, because those DVDs would not work for root too.

On the right side of the Panel, next to the icon that shows my network is connected and the icon for the Volume Control is another icon that pops up a Notification when a USB drive is connected or when new email comes in or whatever. When I load a blank DVD into either of the optical drives, a Notification pops up there showing that a blank DVD is available for burning.

You should check as follow, as root and as user:
right click on Device notifier -> Device Notifier Settings -> Device Actions

When I click on Notification Settings, I do not get a screen that looks exactly like the image you posted. I have just 3 options: Information, Keyboard Shortcut, and Share. If I need to go to another location on the computer to get what you showed in your image, I do not know where to find it. And I am not sure I would know what to do if I did find it. The image you posted shows lines for playing DVDs with 2 different programs, but does not show anything about creating DVDs. The lines for creating a file project, Audio CD or Copy with K3B simply shows Storage Volume, Optical Disk.

After I installed previous versions, the burners worked OK up to and including version 2011.6. Since I wiped the hard drive and did a clean install of 2011.9 I have had this problem.

The "Notifications" applet has an icon with a "i" inside, the "Device Notifier" has an icon with the USB symbol inside.
You can reach the Device Notifier settings in a different way:
Configure your desktop -> Hardware -> Device Actions

Until I found some problem, I'm assuming my settings are correct.

After I installed previous versions, the burners worked OK up to and including version 2011.6. Since I wiped the hard drive and did a clean install of 2011.9 I have had this problem.

Nothing to worry about, clearly something went wrong at some point .... only we need to find "what" and we need your cooperation, as no one else can access your system 

There has been a couple of previous suggestions about to check settings in K3b ... did you check it ?

Regarding groups and permissions, I found in K3B Setup System Permissions setting for Devices: Permissions are "660rootdisk" and New Permissions are "660rootn8oay" for both drives. Is this setting possibly part of the problem?

Hello-
I'm taking a break from my sound problem with Pinnacle 800i to suggest something that happened to me some time ago with 2 Hard Drives.

1. Remove one of the DVD recorders and reboot. See if all is well with only one DVD burner. Do all the things - load DVD, etc. - to make sure that one drive is OK.  Physically CHECK to see if the drive you removed is set to Master or Slave.

2. Swap the drives and repeat to see if all is well with this other drive being the only DVD drive.  Physically CHECK to see if the drive you just took out is set to Slave or Master.

3. At least you'll know that if one is "Master" and one is "Slave", you can move on to permissions and such.

Drive jumper settings are not an issue. Everything in this computer worked OK with the previous PCLOS installation, and they work OK now when I am logged on as root. The problem exists only when I am logged on as the user. When I am logged on as user, K3B does not detect the DVD burning capability of either drive, but it will burn CDs. I think it just about has to be a permissions issue that is buried somewhere, but I am not smart enough to find and fix it.

In addition to other suggestions, have you rerun K3B setup? In a terminal, just enter

k3bsetup

and follow the prompts.

At the top of of K3BSetup for Use Burning Group, burning is displayed.

In the top section of K3BSetup for Devices, I see the following for each drive:
Permissions 660rootdisk
New Permissions 660rootburning

In the bottom section of K3BSetup, I see the following for programs CDRDAO and CDRECORD   I see the following for each program:
Permissions 4710rootn8oay
New Permissions no change

For GROWISOFS I see the following:
Permissions 0750 rootn8oay
New Permissions no change
